WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Pace Law School is pleased to
announce the Hon. Sondra Miller will serve as distinguished
judge-in-residence following her retirement from the Appellate
Division of the New York Supreme Court. Judge Miller will
participate in teaching classes in her areas of expertise, including

"Judge Miller has been a leader in the New York Judiciary and
we are delighted that she is bringing her deep experience and
commitment to Pace Law School," says Dean Stephen Friedman.
Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Judge Sondra Miller to the Appellate
Division of the Supreme Court, Second Department in January 1990. She
was then serving as a New York State Supreme Court Judge of the Ninth

Justice Miller is a leader and a role model. Among her many
"firsts" are her law degree from Harvard Law School (she was
in its first class to admit women), her election to the Supreme Court,
Ninth Judicial District in November 1986 (the first Democrat to win a
contested election in the 9th JD in nearly 100 years), and her
appointment as Associate Justice, Appellate Division, Second
Department, in January 1990 (the first woman in the 9th JD to be so
recognized). Judge Millerıs legal decisions are frequently cited in
various areas of the law and most particularly for their impact on
family law and the rights of children.
She serves by appointment of Chief Judge Judith Kaye as Co-Chair
with Justice Anthony Cardona of the New York State Family Violence
Task Force. In addition, she serves by appointment of the
Governor on the New York State Permanent Judicial Commission on
Justice for Children. Most recently Chief Judge, Judith Kaye,

Services Division of the Office of Court Administration to facilitate
and evaluate all services provided for families and children in New
York State.
Among Justice Miller's past contributions to the community is her
service as a founding member and past president of the Westchester
Women's Bar Association and as Vice President of the Womenıs Bar
Association of the State of New York. She is an active member of
several bar associations, and is a popular lecturer. A proud mother
and grandmother, Justice Miller is a successful proponent of balancing
the demands of career and family.
Judge Miller has received many honors and awards in New York State
recognizing her work in the various fields of law, including those
