The CAP Program utilizes a holistic approach to foster academic success. Students in the CAP Program begin their course of study at Pace University, as do all freshmen, by taking courses that fulfill core requirements. These include English and Math, UNV 101, a Learning Community, and a variety of other courses that satisfy area requirements of the core. In addition, the Program offers a number of special features that distinguish it from other first-year programs.

  • Smaller classes that allow professors to give individualized attention
  • Extra class time to build foundational skills
  • An academic adviser who will guide students through their first year.
  • A peer mentor who will support students by sharing his/her experience

Advising

A student’s relationship with his/her CAP adviser will be the cornerstone of the CAP year.  Advisers will guide students through course registration, monitor their academic progress, discuss major and career options, and counsel them on the use of appropriate resources.  Advisers meet with students weekly in UNV 101 and are also available for individual advising sessions.  Advisers maintain an open-door policy to encourage students to ask questions, share concerns, and get advice.

University 101 (UNV 101)

Once a week in their first semester students attend a UNV 101 course taught by their adviser.  In the course, students develop college success skills, including time management, test preparation, and organizational skills.  They are also formally introduced to the University’s Tutoring Center, Writing Center, and other resources, including the library, Counseling Center, Co-Op and Career Services.  Peer leaders (sophomores, juniors, or seniors who have successfully completed the CAP Program) assist the adviser in teaching the course by talking with students about keys to their success.
