Summer Scholars Institute at the Confucius Institute

The Summer Scholars Institute, now in its thirteenth year, is a groundbreaking, intensive two-week program designed for exceptional rising juniors and seniors eager to experience the atmosphere of college with interactive courses to meet the individual interests of students.  The 2012 Summer Scholars Institute will run from July 15th to July 28th and for the first time, in cooperation with the Confucius Institute at Pace University, will include a Chinese Studies major.

Chinese Studies will be composed of the course Chinese Language and Culture. This two week intensive course, basically covering the content of a one-semester, three-credit course CHI 101, is designed to introduce the language and cultures of the Mandarin Chinese speaking peoples. In this course, students will learn the Chinese Romanization system (pinyin), the character writing system, the most commonly used vocabulary and sentence patterns necessary for everyday communication about various topics (greetings, introductions, meeting and making plans, making phone calls, ordering food, going shopping …). As language loses its meaning without the cultural context, we incorporate into the curriculum a variety of culture-related activities including film screening, calligraphy, Chinese art appreciation, tea culture presentation, field trips, and happy hours. The main instructive goal of this course is to help beginners develop their four communicative skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while gaining an understanding of Chinese culture. We also aim to prepare them for a further study of Chinese language and cultures at the college level.

For more information about the Summer Scholars Institute please check out the program's website at www.pace.edu/summer-scholars.  The deadline for applying for the program is June 15, 2012.
