Meet the Instructor
Stacy L. Spencer joined the Museum of the City of New York in May 2011 as Director of Grants. Prior to her current position she was Director of Institutional Gifts at the Apollo Theater, where she oversaw corporate, foundation, and government fundraising during a period of extensive programmatic expansion. For eight years, Stacy worked as a Development Consultant for a range of New York City organizations including The Public Theater, Film Society at Lincoln Center, the Asian Cultural Council, the Blanton-Peale Institute, the Supportive Housing Network, and the National Academy Museum & School of Fine Arts. At The Public Theater, where Ms. Spencer consulted from 2003-2009, she provided vital services at a time when the dynamic theater’s organizational budget doubled from $11 million to $22 million, while both the institutional giving staff (one full-time) and the portion of the budget raised from institutional sources (40%) remained stable. At the National Academy, she assumed responsibility for institutional giving during a period of organizational transition by putting in place key structures and formulating a fundraising plan. Prior to 2002, she served at Barnard College as Associate Director of Alumnae Affairs and Yale University as the Grant Writer in the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations. Ms. Spencer holds a Ph.D. in American Culture from the University of Michigan and graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College with degrees in English and American Studies. She lives with her husband and daughter in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.
