What is classroom etiquette for laptop use?

When using your laptop in the classroom make sure to check with your professor regarding his/her preferences or guidelines on the use of laptops in the classroom. This will vary from professor to professor and from class to class.  While class is in session, pay your professor due respect by giving him/her your full attention.  Do not surf the web, instant message, or read email during class.  Outside of the classroom you may find that you will use your laptops most frequently for homework, computing anywhere on campus or at home, and for use on team projects while traveling on Internships, study abroad programs, school activities, etc. Remember to always take care of your laptop and do your best to keep it safe.

I have a Virus, what do I do now?

To prevent this situation, be aware and carefully follow safe computing practices. Every year there seems to be a virus that sweeps through computers nationwide, transmitted by opening email attachments you were not expecting to receive, etc. Once you have contracted a virus on your computer, do the following as soon as possible: Quarantine!  Do not share any files from your computer with anyone else; Check that you have the latest updates for Norton AntiVirus via the Internet;  Run the most recently updated version of Norton AntiVirus software on your hard drive; Check with the ITS team to see if there is a patch or known fix; In extreme cases, you may need to reinstall your operating system and software.

Can I install other programs on my laptop?

As a tool for your education, it is important that you protect your laptop and maintain its stability. Adding anything to your laptop can affect its stability. We, therefore, urge you to not load ANY software or hardware that is not recommended by Pace University or does not directly support your instructional use.  You are ultimately responsible for your laptop and the one who suffers the loss, so take great care and effort to protect yourself!

How can I take care of mylaptop?

Laptops are portable, which means they can be taken everywhere—even into the mud and the rain. Special care must be taken of these computers, as for all scientific and electronic equipment. Keep all equipment dry and clean; If you are using a laptop where it is wet or muddy, put the keyboard in a clear plastic bag.  On field trips, use a dry box and a wet box to separate supplies and equipment. Air-dry all equipment at the end of the activity. Click here for the Gateway 200 Notebook Laptop Manual, or Click here for the DELL Latitude D600 Laptop Manual.
