Opportunitas

With the economy being on life support, many of my friends are feeling discouraged about receiving a job offer upon graduation. "There's no room left for me in the field that I'd like to work in. Budget cuts equal job cuts and that means fewer opportunities for me. Right?" Wrong!

Toughen up kids! Think positive! Yes, there's room for you in America's economy! At this point, you should be asking yourself, "What can I do to make myself strong competition?" or "What is on my resume that will make me a better candidate than the next person?" Success usually stems from strong determination. Once you've established your winner confidence, you're already halfway there. All employers want to work with someone who has a good attitude. However, don't get too excited because this still won't land you a job on a stand-alone basis!

First and foremost are the two P's; the paper (your resume) and the presentation (the interview). Are you bad at thinking on the spot? Do you say "um", "Uhh", and other filler words a billion times while in the process of getting your point across? Is that interview next week making you extremely nervous? Use your resources! Visit our Co-Op and Career Services Department and schedule a mock interview. "A mock interview? What is that?" Geez! Must I do all the work? Scheduling a mock interview is a service that the University provides to help you with your interviewing skills. They ask you typical "interview" questions and advise you on ways to improve your professional self. Best of all, you can ask to be recorded so that you can replay the interview and study how stupid you look to make yourself better. However, you won't be able to showcase your new skills without looking good on paper first. Lucky for you, Co-Op and Career Services will also help you spiffy up that resume! Not to mention that they host numerous internship fairs throughout the semester and have an incredible database with job postings galore!

Pace University’s motto has always been “Opportunitas” since it was first founded in 1906 because its location provides resources which are essential to creating a variety of opportunities for its students. Today, the university still aims to provide the same opportunities. As Pace students, and as young entrepreneurs, it’s our obligation to use our resources to find the opportunities that suit us best. Use your resources. Be Impressive. Get proactive. Take charge of your future. Find your Opportunitas.
