Dual Major

Guess who’s officially dual majoring in communication studies and English?

ME!!!!!! :-)

I came into Pace as a communication studies major and later declared my concentration in media studies (With this major, it’s mandatory to choose media studies or public & professional relations as a concentration). As of last week, I visited the English department on the 15th floor of 41 Park Row, talked with the department chair (who is now my English adviser), discussed my possibilities in the field by adding English as my dual degree and confirmed this was the right path for me.

In a mouthful sentence: “I am a communication studies major with a concentration in media studies obtaining a dual degree in English with a focus in writing and literature.”
Wow.

It already sounds like hard work (no doubt that it will be) and I haven’t even gone for advisement for my schedule next semester. Nonetheless, I’m ecstatic with my decision. If my goal of becoming a broadcast journalist doesn’t pan out, I want to be somewhere in the publishing field.

I have experience with web writing (like with this Pace blog and many more) and at a newspaper back home. More recently, I was exposed to children’s book publishing while I was a marketing volunteer for Kiba Kiba Books, LLC. Also, my experience this year being the Production Manager of The Pace Press has been very beneficial in defining my professional goals.

Obtaining a dual degree will be harder, take a little longer to get (that’s what summer and winter courses are for), but will be worth all the extra input in the long haul.

My advice for anyone attempting or thinking about this route: Make sure that your degrees fit your personality and your professional goals, and most importantly, that you make an informed decision.
