Working Full-Time Students
Life is tough! I have been working during the day, going to classes at night, and falling asleep on textbooks. This fall, I intern for an online marketing firm in Soho. I learned about the position last year during a presentation by Lubin's Interactive Direct Marketing lab. I polished my resume, dusted my career suit, and prepared for the interview. It's so easy to be discouraged when job searching. I had five job interviews last year, and got several call backs-- many of which were non paid positions. I asked myself honestly what was best for my career track and financial needs, and selected an internship. They wanted one month non paid which was fine; some internships are credit-only.
Social life has taken the backseat this semester... so has sleep. With all things considered, I am definitely planning next semester out more wisely. These are all great factors to consider for registration this spring: How many hours would you like to work? Do you have time to study and do all the homework? Do you have time to sleep? Check credit requirements for your majors and minors. Although your school advisor is here to help you, you are responsible for delivering the final revisions and registrations.
Your college experience does not have to follow a nice linear path. Please invent your own definition of success because it varies for everyone. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to fit someone else's standards of success... or interests for that matter. True, your college years are precious... but unique experiences apply to every year for the rest of your life. Don't be held hostage by other people's ideals; create your own, work your magic, and go get 'em tiger!
