Biology and Health Sciences Undergraduate Programs

The Department of Biology and Health Sciences offers a number of undergraduate, joint undergraduate/graduate degree, and professional programs, the choice of which depends upon your career objective. If you are not sure of this when you begin your studies, a program will be arranged that suits your specific interests at the time, but that can be adjusted as your career vision becomes more focused.

Our undergraduate programs include:

Biology, BA (NYC, PLV)
This course of study will prepare you for a non-scientific career that may require significant background in biology and health sciences. This could include science education at the primary or secondary school level, scientific journalism, scientific marketing and sales, and legal areas, such as environmental and patent law. The BA degree provides for a greater liberal arts background and the opportunity to take more elective courses than does the traditional BS degree program while still specializing in biology and health sciences.

The Bachelor of Arts curriculum consists of a group of Biology Core Courses, Biology elective courses, and specific chemistry, and mathematics courses.

Biology, BS (NYC, PLV)
This course of study will prepare you for further education in scientific graduate school programs and for professional schools, such as medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, or for employment in the medical, biotechnological or environmental fields.

The Bachelor of Science curriculum consists of a group of Biology Core Courses, Biology courses specific for a chosen concentration, and specific chemistry, mathematics, and physics courses. Biology majors have the option of specializing in one of the following three academic tracks (concentrations) after you have obtained a solid foundation in basic biological principles:

General Biology - This track provides a broad study plan that covers various areas of the biological sciences, including physiology, ecology, botany, genetics and microbiology.

Environmental Biology - This track emphasizes study of the interrelationship between the living and nonliving components within our environment, and the effects of human activity upon them.

Molecular and Cellular Biology - This track emphasizes study of the biochemistry of cellular structure and function and the technologies involved in the investigation of molecular processes within cells.

There is great flexibility in elective coursework within each track, such that a program can be developed for your specific interests, even if this crosses the boundaries between these broad areas of study.

Environmental Science, BS (NYC, PLV)
This degree program provides students with an interdisciplinary environmental science degree within the context of a liberal arts education. It is designed for students interested in a scientific perspective on environmental issues, providing the student with both basic and applied knowledge needed to understand the environment and associated problems. This degree will allow students to continue with advanced studies in a graduate degree program or to enter the job market for environmental science positions.

The curriculum includes courses offered by both the Department of Biology and Health Sciences and the Department of Environmental Studies.
