The Honorable Tom Ridge, First US Secretary of Homeland Security, CEO and President, Ridge Global
The Honorable Tom Ridge is the president and CEO of Ridge Global. As the company’s chief executive, Ridge leads a team of international experts that help businesses and governments address a range of needs throughout their organizations, including risk management, global trade security, emergency preparedness and response, strategic growth, infrastructure protection, technology integration, crisis management and other issues that encompass a diverse portfolio.
Following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, Tom Ridge became the first Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and, on January 24, 2003, became the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The creation of the country’s 15th Cabinet Department marked the largest reorganization of government since the Truman administration and another call to service for the former soldier, congressman and governor of Pennsylvania.
During his tenure, Secretary Ridge worked with more than 180,000-plus employees from a combined 22 agencies to create an agency that facilitated the flow of people and goods, instituted layered security at air, land and seaports, developed a unified national response and recovery plan, protected critical infrastructure, integrated new technology and improved information sharing worldwide. Tom Ridge served as Secretary of this historic and critical endeavor until February 1, 2005.
Before the events of September 11th, Tom Ridge was twice elected Governor of Pennsylvania. He served as the state’s 43rd governor from 1995 to 2001. Known for his commitment to high standards and results, Governor Ridge delivered on his promise to make Pennsylvania “a leader among states and a competitor among nations.” Governor Ridge’s aggressive technology strategy helped fuel the state’s advances in economic development, education, health care and the environment.
Born August 26, 1945, in Pittsburgh’s Steel Valley, Ridge was raised in a working-class family in veterans’ public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967.
After his first year at Penn State University’s Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. After returning to Pennsylvania and to Dickinson, he earned his law degree and was in private practice before becoming assistant district attorney in Erie County.
Tom Ridge was elected to Congress in 1982. He was one of the first Vietnam combat veterans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and was overwhelmingly re-elected by Pennsylvania voters five times.
An engaging and dynamic speaker, Secretary Ridge regularly addresses audiences throughout the world on issues, such as security, terrorism, global engagement, leadership, technology and more. Additionally, the first U.S. secretary of Homeland Security serves on the boards of the Institute for Defense Analyses, the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress and other private and public entities, and since 2005, has served as chairman of the National Organization on Disability. Secretary Ridge continues to contribute to matters concerning our nation’s veterans and, along with Gen. Tommy Franks (Ret.), serves as national co-chairman of the Flight 93 Memorial Fundraising Campaign.
Throughout his public and private sector career, Tom Ridge has received numerous honors, including the Woodrow Wilson Award, the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Dwight D. Eisenhower Award, the John F. Kennedy National Award, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the American Bar Association’s John Marshall Award, the National Guard’s Harry S. Truman Award, the Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation’s Conservationist of the Year Award, U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce’s Good Neighbor Award, the American Cancer Society’s prestigious National Medal of Honor, the Mister Rogers Award, the Champion of Public Television Award, the Intrepid Freedom Award and the Esperanza Leadership Award. Secretary Ridge has also been awarded honorary degrees and awards from many national and international academic institutions.
Tom Ridge and his wife, Michele, have two children.
Margareta Wahlström - Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, United Nations
Ms. Wahlström was appointed as Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction in November 2008.
Ms. Wahlström has over 30 years of extensive national and international experience in humanitarian relief operations in disaster and conflict areas, and in institution-building to strengthen national capacity for disaster preparedness, response and for risk reduction.

Nira Herrmann, PhD – Dean, Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, Pace University
Nira Herrmann, Ph.D., is the Dean of the Dyson College of Arts and Sciences at Pace University, serving as the academic leader for over 190 fulltime faculty in 25 departments located primarily on two campuses, downtown Manhattan and Pleasantville, NY.
Dyson College offers liberal arts programs in the fine and performing arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences with over 50 undergraduate and 14 graduate major programs as well as most of the Core Curriculum courses.
Dr. Herrmann received her Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in statistics from Stanford University, and an MS in Computer Science from Rutgers University.
Andrew Revkin – Senior Fellow for Environmental Understanding, Pace Academy for Applied Environmental Studies and Author of “Dot Earth” blog for the New York Times
After nearly 15 years reporting on the environment for the New York Times, Andrew C. Revkin left the staff at the end of 2009 to become a senior fellow at Pace University’s Pace Academy for Applied Environmental Studies. He continues to write the paper’s Dot Earth blog, which has moved from the news side of The Times to the Opinion section.
Revkin reported on the global environment in print and on Dot Earth. He has spent more than a quarter century covering subjects ranging from Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami to the assault on the Amazon and the troubled relationship of climate science and politics. He has been reporting on the environment for the New York Times since 1995, a job that has taken him to the Arctic three times. In 2003, he became the first Times reporter to file stories and photos from the sea ice around the North Pole. Revkin spearheaded a three-part Times series and one-hour documentary in 2005 on the transforming Arctic and another series, “The Climate Divide,” on the uneven impacts of climate change. Revkin’s work on climate change has won most of the major awards for science journalism. In 2011, he became the first two-time winner of the Communication Award bestowed jointly by the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine.
Andrew Revkin has written books on the Amazon rain forest, global warming and the once and future Arctic. Before joining The Times, he was a senior editor of Discover, a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times, and a senior writer at Science Digest.
Revkin has a biology degree from Brown and a Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia. He has taught at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism and the Bard College Center for Environmental Policy, and has launched a new course at Pace University, entitled “Blogging a Better Planet.”
Glen L. Woodbury – Director, Center for Homeland Defense and Security
Glen Woodbury is the Director of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security responsible for leading the Center’s strategic commitment to servicing the homeland security educational priorities of the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security and Defense, as well as local, state, tribal and federal agencies. His previous responsibilities as an Associate Director from 2004-2007 included the development of executive education workshops, seminars and training for senior state and local officials as well as military leaders.
He served as the Director of the Emergency Management Division for the State of Washington from 1998 through 2004. In this capacity, he directed the state’s response to numerous emergencies, disasters and heightened security threat levels since his appointment by the Adjutant General and the Governor. Mr. Woodbury was the Director during the World Trade Organization disturbance in Seattle in 1999, the Nisqually Earthquake in February 2001, the TOPOFF II Exercise in 2003, the national response to the attacks of September 11th, and many other natural and manmade emergencies and disasters. During his tenure, the division received numerous awards and recognition for national and international excellence in the areas of public education, tsunami and earthquake preparedness, hazard mitigation and homeland security.
Mr. Woodbury is a Past President (2002-2003) of the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA,), which represents all state and territorial emergency management directors in the development and advocacy of national policy, strategic and operational issues. He served as the emergency management representative to the Advanced National Seismic System Advisory Board, the Co-Chair of the Mitigation Committee, the interim Intergovernmental Relations Sub-Committee Chair to the developing National Homeland Security Consortium, and as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Center for State Homeland Security, (a non-profit partnership of NEMA, the Adjutants General Association of the US, and Mitretek Systems.) He also served in a variety of capacities on many Washington State and national councils, committees, and professional organizations.
Glen Woodbury served in the US Army as a communications officer from 1985 until he began his emergency management career in the State of Washington as an operations officer in 1992. Prior to his selection as the agency’s director, he managed the state’s Emergency Operations Center for two years. He has served as an officer in the US Army Reserves and as a volunteer firefighter in East Olympia, WA.
Mr. Woodbury holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Engineering Sciences from Lafayette College in Easton, PA (1985) and a Masters of Arts Degree in Security Studies (Homeland Defense and Security) from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA (2004.) He is a winner of the George C. Marshall Award, a Distinguished Military Graduate from Lafayette College and a winner of the Governor’s Distinguished Manager Award in 2003.
Joseph F. Ryan, Ph.D.
Joseph Ryan is a professor and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Security at Pace University in New York and a member of University’s Board of Trustees. Professor Ryan received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Fordham University. Dr. Ryan is a 25-year veteran of the New York City Police Department and was their expert on evaluations of all levels of police management, and their expert on community policing and violence, especially as it relates to spouse, child and elder abuse. Dr. Ryan was also a Visiting Fellow with the National Institute of Justice and is currently a visiting professor at the New York City and Westchester County Police Academies and a Certified Instructor by the State of New York Municipal Police Training Council.
Dr. Ryan chaired an Advisory Group for the U.S. Department of Justice that developed security strategies for the 1996 summer Olympics, conducted the landmark National Evaluation of Title I of the 1994 Crime Act and provided testimony before the U.S. Congress’ sub-committee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations re developing risk management and outcome based performance measurement strategies. Dr. Ryan has recently completed an impact evaluation of the Master’s degree in Homeland Security and an Executive Leaders Program, offered at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Dr. Ryan is now also the director of Pace University’s new degree for a Master’s in Management for Public Safety and Homeland Security.
Bel Raggad, Ph.D – Professor, IT, Seidenberg School, Pace University
Dr. Bel G. Raggad is a Professor of IT in the Seidenberg School, Pace University, NY. He obtained his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1989. He is currently a co-Director of Pace’s Seidenberg Institute of Cybersecurity.
His research interest is in Intelligent Decision Support and Information Security. He has written several books in the area of IA, including a recent textbook “Information Security Management: Concepts and Practice,” published by CRC Press. He has published a large number of articles in refereed journals, including the Journal of CIS, Managerial Decision, Journal of Management and Information Processing, etc.
Stephen J. Friedman – President, Pace University
Stephen J. Friedman became the seventh president of Pace University on June 4, 2007. He served for three years as dean of Pace University School of Law prior to being named president by the Pace University Board of Trustees.
Friedman is a former senior partner at Debevoise & Plimpton LLC, commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission, deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury, executive vice president and general counsel at The Equitable Companies Incorporated and the E.F. Hutton Group Inc., and U.S. Supreme Court law clerk.
Friedman is chairman emeritus of the American Ballet Theatre. He serves as a trustee of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, The New York Downtown Hospital, the Practising Law Institute, and as a member-at-large of the Executive Board of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Stock Exchange Regulations, Inc., the Alliance for Downtown New York, Inc., the Westchester County Association, and Project Rebirth.
Friedman received his AB magna cum laude in 1959 from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and his JD magna cum laude in 1962 from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of Harvard Law Review and a recipient of the Sears Prize.

Ivan Seidenberg – Chairman, Verizon Communications
Ivan Seidenberg is chairman of the board of Verizon Communications Inc.
Mr. Seidenberg led Verizon from its inception, first as co-Chief Executive Officer in 2000, then as sole CEO since 2002, and CEO and chairman since 2004. He stepped down from the CEO post in July 2011 when the Verizon Board of Directors named Lowell McAdam as president and CEO, completing the company’s CEO succession process under way since 2010. As chairman, Seidenberg continues to assist in the transition and continues as a member of the Verizon Board of Directors.
As chairman and CEO, Seidenberg transformed the company into a premier global network company by building a nationwide wireless network, deploying high-speed fiber broadband direct to homes, and expanding its global Internet backbone network around the world. Under his leadership, Verizon has stayed at the cusp of technology innovation with its industry-leading FiOS fiber-optic network, its planned deployment of Long Term Evolution 4G wireless technology, and its various initiatives to stimulate the development of innovative products and applications for its broadband and wireless platforms. Before becoming Verizon’s CEO, Seidenberg was chairman and CEO of its predecessor companies, NYNEX and Bell Atlantic. In a period of massive industry transformation, he built Verizon by combining Bell Atlantic and NYNEX, GTE and MCI; and created Verizon Wireless by merging Bell Atlantic Mobile, GTE Wireless and portions of Vodafone AirTouch. Since his beginning as a cable splicer's assistant at New York Telephone, Seidenberg’s communications career has spanned more than 40 years.
Seidenberg has a long-standing commitment to using communications technology to address societal issues and improve education, healthcare, and the environment. The company’s signature philanthropic programs include Thinkfinity.org, an award-winning online educational resource, and HopeLine, a wireless recycling program whose proceeds go toward domestic violence prevention.
From 2009 to 2011 Seidenberg chaired the Business Roundtable, an influential association of CEOs of leading U.S. companies. In June 2010, President Barack Obama appointed him to the President’s Export Council, which will advise the president on how to promote U.S. exports, jobs and growth. In 2007 President George W. Bush named him to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, which provides counsel on communications issues related to national security. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences’ President’s Council and serves on the board of trustees of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, The New York Hall of Science, Pace University, the Paley Center for Media, and on the Board of Directors of BlackRock, Inc. David J. Shulkin – President, Morristown Medical Center and Vice President, Atlantic Health System
David J. Shulkin, M.D. is President at Morristown Medical Center, a 695 bed comprehensive healthcare organization, part of Atlantic Health. In 2011, for the third year, Dr. Shulkin was named one of the “50 Most Influential Physician Executives in the Country” by Modern Healthcare and Modern Physician. Previously, Dr. Shulkin was names of the “One Hundred Most Influential People in American Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare. Prior to coming to Morristown Medical Center, Dr. Shulkin was the President and CEO of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, where he led a financial turnaround and rebuild of the 1.3 billion dollar organization. Dr. Shulkin has served in numerous physician leadership roles including the Chief Medical Officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University Hospital, and the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital. Dr. Shulkin has also served in academic positions including the Chairman of Medicine and Vice Dean at Drexel University School of Medicine. As an entrepreneur Dr. Shulkin founded and served as the Chairman and CEO of DoctorQuality, Inc one of the first consumer orientated sources of information for quality and safety in healthcare. Dr. Shulkin has been on the editorial boards of numerous journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association and Hospital Physician, and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Patient Safety, the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management and the Journal of Disease Management.
Dr. Shulkin is a board-certified internist, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, Professor of Medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and a Senior Fellow at the Health Research And Education Trust of the American Hospital Association, a Senior Fellow at the School of Population Health at Thomas Jefferson University, and an Senior Fellow (Adjunct) at the Leonard Davis Institute in Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, his internship at Yale University School of Medicine, and a residency and Fellowship in General Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Medical Center. He received advanced training in outcomes research and economics as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Shulkin has received numerous awards and was named one of the country’s top Health care leaders for the next century by Modern Healthcare, an International Leader in Health Care Award by the Healthcare Forum.
Philip J. Palin – Director, Private Sector Integration, Center for Homeland Defense and Security
Philip J. Palin (Phil) is currently Director for Private Sector Integration with the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Naval Postgraduate School. He also serves as coordinator of the Supply Chain Resilience Project of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program. Mr. Palin is a regular contributor to Homeland Security Watch (www.hlswatch.com), a blog recognized by the New York Times for its expertise. Mr. Palin is the principal author of the Catastrophe Preparation and Prevention series from McGraw-Hill. Other major publications include Consequence Management and Threat, Vulnerability, Consequence, Risk. The Homeland Security Affairs Journal has published several of Mr. Palin’s monographs, including “Resilience: The Grand Strategy”. A new text, Catastrophe: Definitions, Characteristics, and Possible Principles of Good Practice will be published in 2012.
During the 2008 presidential election Mr. Palin was one of two Republicans who served on candidate Barack Obama’s Homeland Security Advisory Council where he chaired the Prevention and Preparedness Working Group. He is the principal author of “A Proposed Homeland Security Strategy for the New Administration,” published by the National Institute for Strategic Preparedness. He has testified before the Committee on Homeland Security of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mr. Palin has been an instructor at the Naval Postgraduate School, with the California Peace Officers Standards and Training curriculum, and at the Institute for Preventive Strategies, among other schools and programs. From 1998-2008 Mr. Palin served as Chief Executive Officer of Teleologic Learning Company, an enterprise specializing in strategic development of human resources. He was a co-founder of the firm. While with Teleologic he co-authored Architect for Learning, a textbook on effective design of educational experiences.
From 1991-1998 Mr. Palin served as Managing Director and Chairman of the Board of The Laurasian Institution, a not-for-profit educational foundation focused on cross-cultural issues involving Asia, Europe, and North America. From 1989-1991 Mr. Palin was the President of Tokyo International College, a liberal arts institution serving an international student body in Japan. From 1983-1988 he was the founding Director of the Ronald W. Reagan Scholarship Program at Eureka College, the President’s alma mater. Early in his career Mr. Palin served as a higher education administrator in a variety of roles and as a consultant to the energy industry including Marathon Oil Company, Arizona Public Service, Texas Utilities, Columbia Gas Transmission Company, Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, and others.
Mr. Palin grew up in Illinois. He graduated from Eureka College (Illinois) and The American University (Washington D.C.). Mr. Palin has been married to his wife Jean for over thirty years. They have two adult children raised in Japan and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Joseph F. Bruno, Commissioner, New York City Office of Emergency Management
In March 2004, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appointed Joseph F. Bruno commissioner of the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM). He is the fourth head of the agency since it was established in 1996.
Among his first major initiatives, Commissioner Bruno successfully oversaw New York City’s adoption and implementation of the Citywide Incident Management System (CIMS). CIMS is now the City’s standard for responding to and managing emergencies and planned events.
Commissioner Bruno also oversaw the comprehensive revision of the City’s Coastal Storm Plan to ensure the City is prepared for a worst-case scenario hurricane and can shelter more than 600,000 residents. OEM also developed the “What if New York City…,” a post-disaster housing competition that challenged teams of architects and planners to design temporary housing for dense, urban environments. This marked a critical step in New York City’s effort to plan ahead for long-term housing after a catastrophic disaster.
During his tenure, Commissioner Bruno has successfully coordinated the City’s responses to a variety of emergency and planned incidents. In 2005, he headed the City’s plan to maintain order during the transit strike – three days that left New Yorkers with no subway service and minimal bus transportation. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, he oversaw the development and operation of a Family Assistance Center to assist victims who migrated to New York City. Commissioner Bruno also managed the City’s responses to the Queens blackout in 2006, the steam pipe explosion in midtown Manhattan and the tornado in 2007, two major crane collapses in 2008, the outbreak of the H1N1 virus in 2009, and two tornados and a microburst in 2010.
At the end of 2010 and into 2011, the commissioner coordinated responses to winter storms that led to a number of new winter storm initiatives, like the creation of a tow-truck task force and live video monitoring of road conditions.
In August 2011, Commissioner Bruno coordinated the City’s response to Hurricane Irene, the worst coastal storm to hit the City in more than a decade. The City took unprecedented steps to prepare for the storm, including a mandatory evacuation of more than 370,000 residents in low-lying areas and the entire Rockaway peninsula, a complete shutdown of public transportation, the evacuation of 7,000 patients from hospitals and nursing homes, and opening more than 80 evacuation centers and emergency shelters. The City’s careful planning and coordinated response to Irene helped minimize the storm’s damage.
Highlighting the importance of preparedness, more than 10 million emergency preparedness guides have been distributed through the Ready New York campaign under Commissioner Bruno’s leadership. And with the commissioner’s support, NYC’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program has grown to over 56 teams and 1,500 volunteers trained in basic emergency response, preparedness, and first aid. Commissioner Bruno also added OEM’s technological expertise to the creation of Notify NYC, an emergency notification system for New York City residents that uses text messaging, e-mail and phone to warn subscribers about emergencies.
Commissioner Bruno has a long and distinguished record of public service in New York City. In 1971, he joined the City Law Department as a trial attorney. In 1987, he became the City’s Fire Commissioner. Subsequently, Commissioner Bruno was elected in 1991 and 2001 as a Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York and in 2002 as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. A lifelong New York City resident, Commissioner Bruno holds a B.S. in Economics from City College and a J.D. from St. John’s University Law School.
James G. Featherstone – General Manager, City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department
In October of 2007, James G. Featherstone was appointed General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Emergency Management Department. A native of Washington D.C. and veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Featherstone began his years of service to the City of Los Angeles in 1986 with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).
Mr. Featherstone responded to a variety of emergencies during his tenure with the LAFD. They included the 1992 Civil Disturbance, the 1993 Firestorm, the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, and numerous local major emergencies and regional campaign incidents. In the spring of 2000, he was detailed to a multi-agency team to develop the Fire Department’s Operational and Tactical plans for the 2000 Democratic National Convention (DNC). In this role, he collaborated with a variety of federal, state and local public safety agencies.
Mr. Featherstone is an alumnus of the National Fire Academy, the Executive Leaders Program at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security, and the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at Harvard University. He has also served as an Adjunct Instructor at the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center at Texas A&M University. Mr. Featherstone is a member of the National Incident Management Working Group, and the current Chair of the National Advisory Council for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
David J. Kaufman – Director of Policy and Program Analysis, U.S. Department of Homeland Security/FEMA
David J. Kaufman was appointed Director of FEMA’s Office of Policy and Program Analysis (OPPA) in September 2009. In this position he is responsible for providing leadership, analysis, coordination, and decision-making support to the FEMA Administrator on a wide range of Agency policies, plans, programs, and key initiatives.
Mr. Kaufman has extensive experience with homeland security and disaster preparedness issues. He has been a member of the faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security, where he has taught in the Center’s graduate and executive level education programs, and has previously served in several senior positions in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and in FEMA.
His previous service included establishing the Office of Preparedness Policy, Planning and Analysis in FEMA’s National Preparedness Directorate, where as the Director he led policy and planning efforts for national preparedness; and Acting Director and Deputy Director of the Preparedness Programs Division in the Office for Domestic Preparedness, where he oversaw the day-to-day activities of DHS’ $3 billion portfolio of state, local, and infrastructure preparedness assistance programs.
In 2008, Mr. Kaufman left government service to become Safety and Security Director for CNA, a non-profit think-tank that provides analysis and solutions to challenging problems for all levels of government, where he worked on a range of homeland security issues including community engagement, risk management, and catastrophic planning, and supported the Quadrennial Homeland Security Review.
Mr. Kaufman holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Michigan; a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations, Political Science, and History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and is a graduate of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security’s Executive Leaders Program.
Bryan W. Koon – Director, Florida Division of Emergency Management
Bryan W. Koon is the Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Prior to joining the Division, Bryan served as Walmart’s Director of Emergency Management, after serving for three years as the Senior Operations Manager in Walmart’s Emergency Management Department. In this role, he was responsible for all aspects of Walmart’s Emergency Management efforts, including preparedness, planning, operations, recovery, and mitigation. With a presence in every state plus operations in over 30 international locations, 2.2 million associates, and nearly 100,000 vendors & suppliers, every incident world-wide had a potential impact. The Emergency Management department’s role is to manage those events and ensure customer and associate safety, maintain and restore business operations, and assist the community.
Prior to Walmart, Bryan worked at the White House Military Office for seven years. He started as a Watch Officer in the President’s Emergency Operations Center, when he was an active duty Navy officer. He then spent two years as Training Officer for Presidential Contingency Programs, where he conducted training and exercises for the White House Military Office, United States Secret Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and others. After concluding his active duty Navy service, Bryan continued to serve at the White House while working as a contractor from SRA, International.
Bryan’s specialty in the Navy was as a surface warfare officer. He served on two ships, USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62) and USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73), where he made several deployments while serving as Main Machinery Room Officer and Main Propulsion Assistant.
Bryan has a BS in Natural Resources from Cornell University, and an MBA and a Graduate Certificate in Emergency and Crisis Management from the George Washington University. He has also attended the Executive Leader’s Program at the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
Rose M. Littlejohn – Managing Director, National Operations and CTE, PriceWaterhouseCoopers
Rose Littlejohn is currently the National Operations/CTE Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers responsible for the US Security, Meeting and Events Services, US Travel and CTE Organizations. Ms. Littlejohn is responsible for the strategic design and implementation of the firm’s travel & meetings program, crisis management, background screening, physical security, information security, travel security, security awareness programs and serves as the leader for the firm's internal consulting organization.
Prior to joining PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Ms. Littlejohn was the Director Global Security and Ethics Officer for American Standard Co. Within this role, she was responsible for security operations in over 30 countries. Her accomplishments include the design and implementation of a global background investigation and drug-free workplace program, workplace violence, security guard management and the Corporate Ethics and Compliance program. Within this role, Rose presented to Senior Management Leadership Committee and the Board of Directors.
Prior to joining American Standards Co., Ms Littlejohn was the Global Security Senior Manager responsible for Europe and Africa at Avon Products. Within this role, she designed and implemented global physical security standards, crisis management and disaster recovery programs. Rose conducted complex investigations in Poland, Russia and South Africa that resulted in recognition from Senior Management. She participated as a key team member in the resolution of lengthy and complex kidnappings overseas.
Ms Littlejohn holds a Bachelorate degree in Business Management, a Master in Business Administration and Doctorate candidate in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. She is also a graduate of the Cornell University College Program. Ms Littlejohn holds the designation of a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and is a doctorate candidate.
Ms Littlejohn served as the Chairperson on the Secretary of State’s Overseas Security Advisory, Committee for Security Awareness and Innovation (2003-2006) and is a member of the Domestic Security Advisory Council (DSAC). She served as the Chairperson for the Economic Crime Council, American Society of Industrial Security and also was the Program Leader for the International Security Management’s Association (ISMA) Georgetown University’s Leadership Program. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Greater New York (2007-Present) and Board of Directors of International Security Management Association (ISMA) (2008-Present).
Rose has consulted with The Conference Board on Women & Travel Security Programs and has authored an article entitled “Women at Work” and Making a Place for Ethics.
Dave Komendat – Vice President and Chief Security Officer, Shared Services Group, The Boeing Company
Dave Komendat is the vice president and Chief Security Officer (CSO) for The Boeing Company. In this role, he leads the Security & Fire Protection (S&FP) organization of more than 2000 people including contracted personnel to provide risk management services and standards to protect people, property, and information across the enterprise. He is responsible for functional guidance and governance oversight for Boeing’s global security and fire protection policy and procedures, site security, supply chain security, structural and aircraft fire protection, government and proprietary information security, data protection and security background investigations. Additionally, his organization is responsible for incorporating Business Continuity principles in critical business areas throughout the enterprise as well as lead and oversee emergency and disaster preparedness, international security, crisis management, counterintelligence/counterterrorism programs; threat management, security technical operations, and executive protection.
As CSO, he is the Boeing interface for both national and international security policy engagement with government and industry advisory groups to include Department of Homeland Security’s Critical Infrastructure Partnership Advisory Council and the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), Domestic Security Alliance Council (DSAC) and recently became part of the National Counterintelligence Working Group (NCIWG).
Leading up to his current role, he held a succession of leadership roles including Security Operations manager for the C-17 Program and Site Security manager positions for U.S. Sea Launch in Long Beach, Calif., and Boeing sites in the Seattle area following the Boeing-McDonnell Douglas merger of 1997. In 2001, he became the director of Security for the new Boeing World Headquarters located in Chicago. He was named director of overall Security Integration in 2005 while also assuming the role of acting vice president of SSG Operations where he had enterprise responsibility for Security & Fire Protection, Employee Health and Safety, Frequency Management, Business Continuity, Lean+ and Quality.
Komendat is a member of the Shared Services Group Leadership Team and reports to the Shared Services president.
In 2011, he was awarded the CSO Compass Award and later named Most Influential Security Leader by Security Magazine. He also serves as a member of the Department of Homeland Security’s Critical Manufacturing Leadership Council.
Komendat graduated from California State University at Long Beach with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice specializing in industrial security. He joined McDonnell Douglas as an Industrial Security Specialist in 1986. Komendat is also a graduate of the executive development program at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University in 2005.
Michael A. Mason – Chief Security Officer, Verizon Communications
Michael A. Mason joined Verizon Communications in January 2008 as Chief Security Officer. He oversees and coordinates global security efforts throughout Verizon and all its business units, including enterprise wide security strategy and programs, physical security, cyber security, and law enforcement liaison matters.
Prior to joining Verizon Mr. Mason was an Executive Assistant Director (EAD) with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in charge of the Bureau’s Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch – one of the largest operational entities in the FBI at the time. In addition to the Criminal and Cyber divisions, he was also responsible for the Office of International Operations (which included 59 overseas offices), the Critical Incident Response Group and the Office of Law Enforcement Coordination. Mason began his career with the FBI in 1985. In his initial years with the FBI, his assignments ranged from serving as an undercover narcotics agent to conducting public corruption investigations. He subsequently served in numerous management and executive management positions including service as the Special Agent in Charge of the Sacramento Field Office and as the Assistant Director-in-Charge of the Washington Field Office, the Bureau’s second largest office. Mr. Mason was the recipient of a Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive Service in 2004.
Mason served in the United States Marine Corps from 1980 – 1985 where he achieved the rank of Captain. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University. In 2006 Mason was the commencement address speaker at his alma mater and received an honorary doctoral degree. In April of 2007 Mason received the university’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Mr. Mason sits on the board of directors for the National Cyber and Forensics Training Alliance and the International Security Management Association (ISMA). Mason also sits on the advisory board of the National Family Justice Center Alliance.
Mr. Mason and his wife Susan (also a former Special Agent with the FBI) are the parents of two fine young men; Matthew and Benjamin.
Bonnie S. Michelman, CPP, CPHA - Director of Police, Security and Outside Services at Massachusetts General Hospital, Security Consultant, Partners Healthcare, Inc.
Bonnie S. Michelman has extensive security management and leadership experience in diverse industries. She currently is the Director of Police, Security and Outside Services at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. She also serves as the Security Consultant for Partners Healthcare, which comprises nine hospitals. She was formally District Manager at First Security Services overseeing 60 diverse operations and 1,200 people, Assistant Vice President for General Services/Operations at Newton-Wellesley Hospital managing 16 departments and in corporate security management at Data General Corporation, Westboro, Massachusetts.
Bonnie just finished serving as Past President/Chairman of the Board of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS). She served as President of IAHSS in 2008 and 1995. IAHSS awarded the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Police, Security and Outside Services Department under Bonnie’s direction the Lindberg Bell Award in 1999 and 2007. This is awarded to the finest healthcare security program nationally. Bonnie served as President in 2001 of ASIS-International, a 38,000-person organization, Chairman of the Board in 2002, and Foundation President from 2003-2005. She is an Instructor at Northeastern University, College of Criminal Justice in the Graduate and Undergraduate program since 1988. Bonnie is on the Regional Board of Directors for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and chairs the National Security Committee for them. She was appointed in late 2010 by DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). She is on the board of directors for Employers Against Domestic Violence (EADV). She was the 2007 award recipient of “Campus Safety Director of the Year”. Her department is a two time winner of the coveted IAHSS “Lindberg-Bell” award for the most advanced healthcare security department nationally.
Bonnie is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA). Bonnie has an MBA from Bentley College, an MS in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and a BA in Government and Sociology from Clark University. She is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA). She is an International Certified Instructor in “Management of Aggressive Behavior” (MOAB) and does significant work nationally in the areas of security management, workplace violence, hate crimes, domestic violence, cultural diversity, and risk assessment. She also serves as an expert in negligent or inadequate security litigation. She lectures and consults internationally and has over 60 publications in various journals on safety, security, leadership and management.
Jana D. Monroe – Director of Corporate Security, Southern California Edison – An Edison International Company
Jana Monroe is the Director of Corporate Security for Southern California Edison, headquartered near Los Angeles. SCE is one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric utilities, providing power to 13 million homes and businesses over a 50,000 square mile service territory, encompassing 11 counties in central, coastal, and southern California.
In this capacity, Ms. Monroe and her organization ensure the personal security of 18,000 employees through background checks, badge and access control, threat management, work place violence prevention, incident investigation, and executive protection, both at home and abroad.
Other programs under her leadership protect over 110 occupied facilities and all of the company’s critical electric facilities with state of the art security and surveillance technologies. These sophisticated systems meet the stringent requirements of the Department of Homeland Security and the North American Electric Reliability Council for Critical Infrastructure and Key Resource (CI/KR) sites.
Ms. Monroe also directs SCE’s emergency preparedness and business continuity planning programs. These programs mitigate the potential for loss of life, productivity, or corporate resiliency in the face of natural disasters, terrorist acts, public health crises, or other emergency events.
To guide and energize this effort, Ms. Monroe draws on her extraordinary background in executive leadership, federal law enforcement, and innovative program development. She has over 20 years experience as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation where she applied her strong communication, investigative and analytical skills to counterterrorism, national security, corporate fraud, white-collar crime, corruption, and compliance crimes. She has also demonstrated courage and tactical leadership under fire, as on-scene commander for a terrorist shooting incident at LAX and for numerous SWAT and violent crime operations, high-risk arrests and searches, and special events.
Ms. Monroe was the first female operational Assistance Director in the FBI. Information Security Magazine recognized her as one of the top ten security leaders in the United States, and her leadership was featured in both Working Woman and Arizona Woman magazines. In her law enforcement career and again at SCE, Ms. Monroe is a cultural change agent, creating a strategic environment that is proactive, predictive, and preventive.
Alicia V. Jolla - Senior Group Manager, Global AP Community Engagement
Alicia Jolla joined Target Corporation in October 2008. In her current role as Senior Group Manager for Global Assets Protection she is responsible for international and domestic public safety engagement efforts. Specifically, Alicia leads a team responsible for developing public-private partnerships globally with government, non-profit and community agencies focused on mitigating corporate risk through initiatives with law enforcement, emergency management and public health entities.
Over the past year, these efforts have resulted in successful collaborations with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Alicia oversees the company’s Target & BLUE® initiative that supports local law enforcement and public safety agencies by sharing resources and expertise to help build safer, more vibrant communities. Through the Target & BLUE initiative, Target partners with public safety agencies on the local, state and national level to leverage the company’s resources and expertise to support safe communities. These programs include the Law Enforcement Grant program, Safe City® and Law Enforcement Business Fellowship program.
She co-led internal efforts to define public safety and preparedness as one of Target’s significant reputational focuses, including messaging, reputational strategy development, and advocacy development. She is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s (IACP) Private Sector Committee and the American Red Cross (ARC)’s Corporate Advisory Board.
Prior to her career at Target, Alicia held multiple cross-functional positions, spanning across non-profit, government, and the private sector. She served as the Director of Small Business for the City of Charlotte and worked as a consultant for an economic development agency where she created sustainable development solutions for communities across the U.S. through public-private partnerships.
Alicia graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving both her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and, subsequently a Master’s in Public Administration (MPA). She is also a graduate of Northwestern University – Kellogg School of Management, Senior Executive Leadership Program with the International Security Management Association.
