Modern Languages and Cultures - NYC

Welcome to the Modern Languages and Culture Department on Pace University’s New York City campus. We are a dynamic department that offers a wide variety of courses in nine languages and cultures: Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portugese, Russian, and Spanish. We offer numerous study abroad opportunities and we strongly encourage our students to take advantage of one or more of these enriching experiences.

The Modern Languages major offers the student the possibility of acquiring linguistic, cultural and literary proficiency in two languages, together with practical experience featured in the senior capstone course. The Language, Culture and World Trade major is an interdisciplinary, applied humanities program, which includes the in-depth study of one language and its culture, foundation business courses, a specialization in one area of world trade, the opportunity to balance theoretical knowledge with technical courses, an international internship, and a senior capstone course.

Our faculty makes every effort to provide our students with the opportunity to participate in independent research and service learning, as well as aid them in future career decisions. Together with the Office of Career Development, we sponsor an annual conference on International Careers, where speakers are invited from different academic fields and global corporations to share with us their experiences, suggestions and guidance in the international job market. Our first priority is teaching and providing students with personal attention and advisement in a supportive atmosphere. Class size is small in our advanced classes, which enable us to provide our students with individualized instruction. New technologies enhance our programs and courses. The department has a networked computer lab with word-processing programs in all of our major languages. We also offer a number of online courses.
