BA Theater Arts – Technical and Design

The BA in Theater Arts/Design and Technical Theater Concentration program is committed to providing a meaningful education for the next generation of designers and technicians to thrive in the competitive field of professional theatre, live entertainment, film and television.  A dedicated, award-winning group of professional New York designers/faculty provide a dynamic and comprehensive training community where students will establish immediate and close-working relationships with the faculty.  This program’s goal is to nurture aspiring designers in a collaborative and intensive, practical atmosphere with challenging and rigorous, classroom curriculum.

OUR APPROACH

Students get comprehensive classroom and studio education in scenic, costume, lighting, sound, theatre technology and costume technology.  They also get valuable practical design and technical experience with over 50 faculty directed department and student directed productions.

Students also have the opportunity with outside collaborative projects; the International Tennessee Williams Festival in Provincetown, MA and LaMaMa Theatre in New York City that provide hands-on training along side professionals in their chosen concentration.  Master Classes, guest lecturers, and workshops with Broadway and the film industry designers and professional will add to the training program as an extension to the classroom.

The dedicated, state of the art classrooms and studios, with the latest equipment and resources, give the students the most current technology to aid in their training. 

The close-working relationship of the faculty will guide the student’s progress with portfolio reviews at the sophomore, junior and senior year.  The student will learn in a master-apprentice environment where he/she will work in the classroom and collaborate with peers and professionals.  As a lighting design student, they will acquire practical and challenging skills by mastering all of the detailed aspects of lighting design, drafting, planning, and implementation. 

Students learn from a distinguished faculty of professional designers and artists both in the classroom and through individual guidance an advising during productions in the works.  For all areas of the Design and Technical Theater Concentration internship training is encouraged and often provided in New York City film and television studios and Off-Broadway and Broadway theatres.

The Bachelor Arts (BA) Theater Arts program offers students the opportunity to explore many facets of theater in one of three concentrations: Acting, Directing, and Design/ Technical theatre. The BA in Theater Arts students receive a solid foundation in all aspects of theater as part of a well-rounded liberal arts education.

Students have the freedom to delve deep into the Performing Arts curriculum or supplement their theater degree with a double major or minor. Students also have the opportunity to choose a minor in such fields as English, communications, psychology, and business, a choice that can lead to careers in performing arts management, playwriting, dramaturgy, performing arts history and research, psycho-drama therapy, and broadcasting.
