Dr.
Joseph Ryan is Chair and Professor of Public Administration and
Criminal Justice/Sociology, and a national expert on community policing
and police management related issues.
He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Fordham University, and his
Master and Bachelor's degrees from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Dr. Ryan’s most recent research involves National Institute
of Justice's evaluation of "Title I of the 1994 Crime Act l"
(also known as the "Cops on the Beat Program" American
Justice ); working with the Philadelphia Police
Department to develop a model policy to deal with the crime of stalking;
conducting an evaluation of the role play in the San Diego school system;
and is an active member of the American Society of Criminology.
He was also a former Visiting Fellow with the National Institute of
Justice and a 25-year veteran of the New York City Police Department.
While working with the NYCPD he was their expert on community
policing and violence, especially as it related to spouse, child and elder
abuse. He served as NYCPD's
representative on numerous task forces at both the local and national
level, such as, the NYC Mayor's Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect and
the Centers for Disease Control's Violence Prevention Initiatives.
Dr. Ryan has conducted numerous two-day training seminars on family
violence for Native American Indian tribal officers, prosecutors, judges
and social workers. He continues his research and involvement in the area of
family violence, and is also involved with local police departments in
encouraging and establishing proactive policies to address family violence
and child abuse.
