Juris Doctor/Master of Public Administration The School of Law and the Department of Public Administration offer a combined graduate program of studies in law and public administration. This dual degree is intended to enhance the student's career possibilities in law, government, public interest organizations, health care and related fields. The program seeks to encourage interested and qualified students to broaden and enrich their professional training by concurrent and closely related studies in a wide range of relevant disciplines. The reciprocal acceptance of course credits by each school enables the student to complete the requirements for both degrees in four years rather than the normal five years that would be required if each degree were pursued separately. Admission The student must apply to both schools and meet the admission requirements of each school before admission to joint degree candidacy is approved. The student may, however, apply for admission to the joint program during the first year of study at either school. Written approvals of both the Dean of the Law School and the Chair of the Department of Public Administration are prerequisites to admission to the JD/MPA Program. Course of Study Students may choose from one of the three areas of specialization offered by the Department of Public Administration: administrative management in government, administrative management in health care or administrative management in nonprofit industries. Students must complete a total of 116 credits: 36 credits in residence in the Department of Public Administration and 80 credits in residence in the School of Law. Upon fulfillment of the requirements for the joint degree program, the student is awarded both the J.D. and M.P.A. degrees. It is also possible to undertake the joint program on a part-time basis, with adjustments made in the sequence of courses as may be appropriate and required. Interested students should contact faculty advisors. Full-time students may commence their studies in either the Department of Public Administration or the School of Law. The typical sequences for these two tracks are: Degree Requirements: Credits Department of Public Administration 33 School of Law 80 ___ Total Credits 113 REQUIRED COURSES-MPA PROGRAM:
