Publishing

The Department of English offers the Master of Science in Publishing. The primary purpose of the publishing program is to make accessible to students who wish to enter or who are already working in the publishing field the knowledge and skills they will need to build successful careers for themselves.

Master of Science in Publishing

Under the impact of new technologies and changing marketing conditions, the publishing industry is at present evolving into an increasingly complex, high-risk business, demanding personnel who are knowledgeable about all facets of the publishing enterprise and who possess a healthy awareness of business practicalities in addition to intellectual boldness, imagination and creative energy. As more and more publishing firms are absorbed by multimedia corporations or diversified conglomerates, it is imperative that people who aspire to enter the publishing field attain a degree of professional competence that is immediately useful to a prospective employer.

The Pace University program educates all its students in all pertinent aspects of the publishing business: finance, production, sales and marketing, the legal intricacies of acquisitions and subsidiary rights, and editing. Each course in the program is structured on the principle that its subject matter is part of a cohesive body of knowledge. Therefore, all courses and seminars are organically related one to another, the whole program encompassing the publishing process from acquisition of an author's manuscript to the consumer's purchase of the product. To complement the comprehensive core curriculum, students will be able through elective courses to select areas of concentration best suited to their specific talents and predilections, e.g., financial management, sales and marketing, technology and information systems, and editing. At the same time the program aims to foster in students a respect for and appreciation of the traditional values and responsibilities of the publisher as a disseminator of knowledge, ideas and culture.

Prerequisite

A knowledge of basic computer skills is required of all students admitted to the program. Students who are unable to meet the computer requirement at the time of their admission to the program will be able to make up this deficiency by taking a computer workshop during their first semester of study.

Thesis and Internship Options

All M.S. in publishing students must write a thesis or prepare a report on their internship experiences. These options are fulfilled in the following manner:

Thesis: The thesis topic will evolve from participation in the graduate seminar. The thesis should be an examination of a topic that has been of particular interest to the student and the essay should display original thought and research.

Internships: Qualified students may be selected for internships in publishing firms in the metropolitan New York area. Publishing houses such as Oxford University Press, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Publishing, Times Mirror Magazines and St. Martin's Press have displayed an interest in the internships.

Students working in internships will have the opportunity to acquire practical work experience in the publishing field while studying for the degree.

At the end of the internship, each student will prepare a report on his/her experience that will be presented to the faculty in lieu of a thesis.

Residency: Candidates must fulfill the residency requirement of thirty credits at Pace.
