Biography


Melanie LaRosa is a producer, educator, and filmmaker. Her first film screened around the world at more than 30 festivals, and she has since made another documentary that has also screened around the world, worked in key roles such as cinematographer and post supervisor on many feature length documentaries, and has taught college level film production courses since 2005.

  • NPR program: "Latino USA" [Radio], May 31 2014
    As the Special Projects Producer at Futuro Media Group, worked with award-winning radio host Maria Hinojosa to create featured stories and events, including producing live-streamed media events around the country as part of an NPR-distributed Latino USA expansion, including: - "Quiz The Media" — Chicago, IL. Team based quiz show style event held with DePaul University, Columbia College, and Northwestern. - "Citizenship and Belonging: A conversation with Lulú Martinez" - Chicago IL. An in-depth interview with an undergrad "Chicagoan of the Year. - "Careers In Media for Youth" - New York, NY. A 2-day event about getting started in the media, with keynotes by Stanley Nelson and Maria Hinojosa. - "Lanare and Beyond: A Town Hall about Water" - Fresno, CA. A town hall event with CA State Assembly members and community residents about water contamination. - "Long Beach Eats", Long Beach, CA. A community forum and cooking show about culture, culinary traditions, and cooking together. - "You Crazy: Growing Up Latino and Surviving to 25", Davis, CA. A college panel with youth leaders and experts on mental health issues in Latino communities. All events were live-streamed or live-broadcast.
  • PBS Series: "America By The Numbers" [TV], May 31 2014
    As the Special Projects Producer at Futuro Media Group, produced screening events in Atlanta and Clarkston (GA), Tucson (AZ), San Diego (CA), Boulder (CO), Chicago (IL), and Washington DC for premiere episode, "America By The Numbers: Clarkston, Georgia". Contributed to pre-production and character development for episode on Southeast Asian teens for the full PBS series, which premiered in October 2014 and was distributed in conjunction with WGBH.

    Wrote article, " Broke Filmmaking Rules to Capture Anarchist Poet,” for online feminist news source with international readership of 1.5M per month.

UNIVERSITY SERVICE

  • Field Trip Coordinator [Faculty Advisor]
    Desc: Forged contact with The Meredith Vieira Show to gain VIP access to show tapings for Pace students. With other faculty, attended with student groups, and advised Graduate Assistant on planning.
    Committee's Key Accomplishments: Introduced students to NBC and Comedy Central producers; students submitted resumes for internships. Developed VIP entree to the legendary "30 Rock" building.
  • Connections in Communications between Students and Professionals [Committee Member]
    Desc: Recruited Emmy-award winning Executive Producer to attend student event and share her experiences.
  • Summit on Resilience [Producer, Highlights video]
    Desc: Worked with students to record this event and to edit a polished highlights video and video transcript.
    Committee's Key Accomplishments: Supported student professional development and provided an in-house means for high quality event recording.
