Throughout its history, Pace University has been committed to providing access to excellent education and career preparation. The development and enhancement of computer technology and the Internet enables Pace University to expand the meaning of its motto "Opportunitas," as it offers access to education in new ways. Online programs and courses along with web-assisted and web-enhanced courses are offered to students who wish to pursue higher education and who desire or require the flexibility of learning online. Online components may be integrated into all courses. As with all Pace courses and programs, online courses and programs are developed and evaluated with a commitment to provide a range of learning opportunities and support services that will ensure successful learner outcomes and a positive educational experience for all students. The University’s distance education initiatives are fully integrated into the curriculum. This has been the hallmark of a Pace education for nearly one-hundred years.
As the chief academic officer of the University, working with the President, the Provost shapes and implements Pace University's educational philosophy and policies. The Provost has been designated as the University Officer responsible for the overall administration of all distance education initiatives and is committed to providing the same quality educational experience for all Pace students studying online and onsite. To ensure that the University's Distance Education Policies are consistent with all other policies of the University, the Provost established the Provost's Council on Distance Education, which is made up of representatives from all Academic schools and key administrative units.
The Provost's Council assumes a leadership role in policy formation and is the central deliberative body in which distance education questions and concerns are discussed. From it, various issues are resolved and policy recommendations are disseminated and brought forward to the Deans and Executive Councils. Any of the Schools converting existing programs or proposing new programs for an asynchronous platform must first receive the necessary approvals of their curriculum committees, councils, assemblies and campus councils, if applicable. The proposed program is then brought before the Provost's Council for information sharing and determination of its impact on vital University support services.
