THR 127: Travel Experience in Eastern European Theatre
with Dr. Cosmin Chivu

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This 3-credit course, which is an open elective, is designed to have students get in contact with the bold tradition of Polish and Romanian theatre and the two former Communist countries where the experiential theatre, political theatre, and the theatre of the absurd were born. The course will offer a unique opportunity for theatre students to understand the complexity of creating work that comes out of necessity and will also expand their international interests, skills, and experience. Students will work directly with Romanian and Polish acting and directing students and attend a significant number of performances, lectures, and talkbacks.
The course includes three phases:
· The International Festival of Timisoara, Romania (attending shows, panels, talkbacks, and tours of major theatrical venues)
· Ionesco & The Theatre of the Absurd – Joint workshop with the students of the Theatre Academy of Cluj, Romania
· Grotovski & The Poor Theatre – Joint session with the students of the Polish Film School in Warsaw, Poland
