A New Millennium: Hunger Banquet
On Tuesday April 10, 2012 at 6pm in Gottesman Room Pforzheimer Honors College hosted a hunger banquet. With admission costing six dollars, all proceeds were donated to those who go days without eating.
When we think of people who are suffering from hunger, we think of children in poor third world countries. Amazingly, this is not always the case: There are many Westchester families who are struggling to put food on the table. You do not need to leave New York to find someone who needs help. A representative from UNICEF was present and spoke about how important it is for us to get involved.
Every day we wake up and within minutes we can find something to eat. This is not the same for everyone. Some parents sacrifice eating so their children can have one meal a day. Soup kitchens and food banks are packed with families that just need some assistance. Learning about these problems can certainly help Honors College students put our lives in perspective. We worry about very materialistic needs and thankfully those are our biggest problems. There are many people who are less fortunate then us, and we need to help out.
The overall feeling at this hunger banquet was positive. There was a great showing this year, 128 students participated! There were students sitting in the aisles because there were no open seats at the tables.
This year’s banquet was sponsored by the Pforzheimer Honors College, Golden Key International Honor Society, PSY 223, Delta Sigma Pi, AXE, GSA, Psychology Club, Dow Hall council, Pace Mens Lacrosse team, Campus Crusade for Christ, and many others. Students were excited to participate in this year’s Hunger Banquet. It was a great event and everyone that attended cannot wait to attend again next year!
