On Tuesday, November 27, 2007, eighty-nine Pforzheimer Honors College students packed into Gottesman Room for the 7th annual Wrapping Gifts for Underprivileged Children event. The Honors College donated $2000 worth of toys to be presented to the Pleasantville Cottage School in Pleasantville and Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry. The event was co-sponsored with Psi Chi (the National Honor Society in Psychology), The
Psychology Club, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.
The event kicked off with an introduction by Dr. Janetta Rebold Benton, the Honors College Director for the Pleasantville campus. She invited students to help themselves to a late afternoon snack of pizza and soda while also reminding them to sign in - - attendance is always important! Once everyone was settled, Dr. Benton introduced Ms Phina Geiger, Director of Volunteers at the Pleasantville Cottage School. Ms Geiger spoke about the Pleasantville Cottage School, informing students about the children who reside there and how important an event such as this is in helping bring joy to them during the holiday season. Ms Candida Fitts, Director of Volunteers for the Children’s Village, was also in attendance.
After Ms Geiger’s speech, students began wrapping toys and making holiday cards. Joyful banter filled the air as students socialized while donating their time. The event lasted well after its formal Common Hour time slot as there were many gifts to wrap and students enjoyed being given the opportunity to make a difference. Everyone was filled with holiday cheer as students wrapped a total of 225 gifts. Sal Antolos, a junior Accounting major stated, “It has been a rewarding experience to give back to the children during the holiday season.
