Nikki Spetseris is a 20-year-old communications major from Webster Massachusetts. She joined Honors as an entering first-year student in the Fall of 2003 and is a member of the first class of the Pforzheimer Honors College.
The Honors College highly encourages students to get internships, but no one has taken advantage of the opportunities available more than Nikki. Not only is Nikki the Health editor for the school newspaper, The Paw Print, but she has had two exciting internships in the past year.
Last school year, from October to May, Nikki interned with Inside the Actors Studio, the BRAVO channel celebrity interview show that is taped at Pace’s downtown Michael Schimmel Center of the Arts. “I got an email from one of my professors saying that the show was moving to Pace and any student could apply,” recalls Nikki. She did everything from getting coffee to entertaining guests in the green room. “I met a lot of cool people including Dustin Hoffman, Matthew Broderick, Dave Chappelle, Teri Hatcher, and Tim Allen. It was also pretty exciting hanging out with James Lipton.” The best part of Nikki’s internship was figuring out what she wanted to do as a career: work in television. “I definitely want to go into television production, at this point I would like to go into sports broadcasting but I would also love to work behind the camera.”
Nikki headed back to Massachusetts for the summer where she interned with Fox Sports in Boston. This time she got to interview athletes such as David Ortiz and Tom Brady, as well as to shadow reporters and photographers on their shoots.
“Just smile and be yourself,” Nikki encourages other students who have internships or are interested in getting one. “There will be times you have to do tedious jobs, but if you always smile people will remember you for being a positive person to be around. They try to forget complainers.”
