Trip to United Nations

United Nations Trip
October 8, 2005

On Saturday, October 8, 2005, 15 Honors students visited the United Nations in New York City for a guided tour. The tour left from the lower level of the building and continued throughout various conference rooms and corridors.  Each hallway exhibited elegant artwork, statues, paintings, and carvings, all of which were gifts from many of the 147 UN nations. Interesting world statistics were all over the walls of the United Nations including information such as the Population of each country living on less than $2 a day: Poland 2%, Brazil 22.4 %, India 79.9%, Nigeria 91% (World Bank, 2003).   These statistics astonished many of the students on the tour.  Students were able to sit in   the general assembly room which was impressive and very large. This is where most of the world’s conversations take place. Only six languages are spoken on the floor of the UN: English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, and Arabic.  Overall, the trip to the United Nations was educational and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
