Yoga Workshop
Thursday, December 6, 2007

Two weeks before finals and you could already see the stressed looks around campus. Thursday, December 6, 2007, twenty-one students gathered together at the Goldstein Fitness Center to release the mounting tension of finals. A yoga workshop was conducted by certified yoga instructor and dance therapist, Ms Lauri Nemetz, to divert those anxieties.

Each student grabbed a yoga mat and took a position on the floor. The workshop started out with simple breathing techniques and advanced to poses. For those students who were unable to do the full poses, they were taught modifications so that they could still participate. Ms Nemetz explained how everyone needed to learn to fall before they could master a pose. The fear of falling could limit one’s experience -- a good lesson to be learned as it applies to much more than yoga.

Ms Nemetz encouraged students to let loose and even walk up the walls. The workshop allowed the Honors students break away from life’s everyday frustrations. During the relaxation period, each student was giving a chance to receive a shoulder adjustment to further the relaxation process as they lay there in the darkened room, practicing breathing exercises and listening to calming music.

As Mary Beth Dixon reflected, “Lauri was an awesome instructor and challenged me to relax and divert my strength to poses. After class, I felt so relieved and rejuvenated. Finals, what finals?”

For those of you who would like to de-stress yourselves, there are classes being offered weekly at the Goldstein Fitness Center by yoga instructor, Lauri Nemetz. You can take the yoga class as either a credited class or for recreational fitness.
