Trip to Stew Leonards

Trip to Stew Leonard's
Tuesday, March 7, 2006

On Tuesday, March 7, 2006 students from the Pforzheimer’s Honors College were joined by children from the Pleasantville Cottage School for a fun-filled tour of Stew Leonard’s grocery store.  While on the tour the children were challenged with trivia questions ranging from production output to identifying different fruits and vegetables.  There were several displays set up within the grocery store that engaged the children’s creative minds, such as singing cows and dancing bananas.  The tour guide led the group to the meat department of the store where they saw how the meat was prepared and processed.   Not everyone shared the same enthusiasm as the children.   One of the most exciting experiences from the tour was the chance to pet a live lobster.  The tour guide removed a live lobster from the tank and allowed all the children and students, who wished to do so, to touch the lobster.  To some, the biggest challenge was avoiding the urge of touching the shifty eyes of the lobster.

Aside from the displays and the children’s enthusiasm in spending time with honors students, the best part of the tour was the samples.  The children enjoyed racing through the store from one free sample station to another.  They were able to taste bakery fresh cookies, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and chicken sticks which were the children’s favorites.  On top of all the free samples, the children and students received stickers, hats, and a free wish in the wishing pond found at the entrance of the store.   The fun-filled atmosphere of Stew Leonard’s kept the children interested and energized.  At the end of the tour everyone enjoyed free ice cream while thanking honors students and saying goodbye.
