Pilates
Pilates Workshop
Monday, April 30, 2007
On April 30, 2007, 22 Honors students met in the First Floor Aerobics Room in the Goldestein Fitness Center to have a Pilates lesson by Laurice Nemetz. After the success of last semester’s Yoga event, the Honors College planned a similar physical wellness program for the Spring 2007 semester: Pilates.
The Pilates Method (referred to simply as Pilates) is a physical fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. The program focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and strengthen the deep torso muscles, which are important to help alleviate and prevent back pain. Students were taught the basic maneuvers of a Pilates workout and left feeling invigorated and encouraged.
