Surfaid International Presentation

SurfAid Internation Dinner & Presentation
Tuesday, May 1, 2007

On Tuesday, May 1, 2007 Pace University’s UNICEF C.H.I.L.D. Project hosted a presentation and dinner fundraiser for the non-profit humanitarian aid organization, SurfAid International.  Palm trees and surfboards set the scene for presentations about SurfAid and the United Nation’s views on children’s rights.

SurfAid International works to improve the health of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.  It was founded by Dr. Dave Jenkins, who visited the Mentawai Islands during a surfing trip and was inspired to help the people who live there.  The presentation included a video documenting the living conditions of the Mentawai people, and what SurfAid is doing to improve their health and quality of life.  SurfAid uses sustainable community-based programs to help control malaria, improve nutrition, and decrease the number of deaths in the Mentawai villages.  They have set up various programs including the Malaria Control Program, the Childhood Health Project, and the Malaria Free Mentawai Program.  SurfAid works to achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which  range from eradicating hunger and poverty to achieving universal primary education.

Ms Mary Roodkowsky from the United Nations, spoke about children’s rights and what we can do to help improve the lives of children around the world.  Ms Roodkowsky discussed the ways in which UNICEF’s efforts help the people of the world and described many of her experiences with the organization.  She also acknowledged SurfAid International for their efforts towards accomplishing their mission and for taking the initiative to start such an organization.

The message conveyed by the event was that everyone can take a proactive stance in helping the people of the world.  In addition to the wonderful presentations that were offered, there was a catered dinner that was provided through donations from over ten local restaurants.  The event was successful in raising $460 toward the efforts of SurfAid International.  For more information on SurfAid visit: www.surfaidinternational.org.
