Hunger Banquet
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, the UNICEF C.H.I.L.D. Project, along with the Pforzheimer Honors College and Golden Key International Honor Society, sponsored a presentation from the United Nations Millennium Project, in which a representative from the North America United Nations End Poverty Millennium Campaign spoke about the UN’s Millennium Goals and the need to end world hunger and poverty. Through an interactive learning experience, Pace students, faculty, and staff were separated into three socio-economic classes: low income, middle income, and high income. The food placed on each table was representative of the food those individuals would most likely be eating if they were part of that table’s socio-economic class. The poor income class shared one bowl of rice and one pitcher of water, using just one utensil. The middle income class shared three to four types of food, there were plastic utensils for all, and a choice of drinks. The high income class was served dinner with fancy utensils and sparkling drinks. Through our club members’ efforts, UNICEF was able to have various restaurants donate food, which all attendees of the event enjoyed after the presentation. Overall, the Hunger Banquet was an excellent learning experience and we were able to raise more than $260 for the USA fund for UNICEF through this one event.
