Open Meeting

Guest Speaker: Dr. Melissa Cardon

On March 11th, 2008, the Honors College hosted the Spring Open Meeting in the Gottesman Room with Dr. Melissa Cardon of the Lubin School of Business as the guest speaker. At this event, Honors students were offered many interesting flavors of ice cream ranging from simple vanilla and chocolate to chocolate covered pretzel ice cream to Dr. Benton’s lactose-free ice cream. There was also a multitude of cookies, as well as flavored drinks. The food was great, but in no way was it what the Honors College members showed up for.

The main attraction was Dr. Melissa Cardon and her speech on passion in our everyday lives. She started it off by explaining to the group that the word “passion” she was going to talk about was not as our teenage minds thought of it. Instead, the word “passion” refers to the self-motivation that fuels individuals to be the best person they can be and accomplish all the goals they strive for day by day. She made mention of Carnegie Mellon University’s Professor Randy Pausch who went on a lecture tour with only months to live. He spoke to his listeners about striving for their goals and not letting anything get in their way. Dr. Cardon also asked us, quoting Professor Pausch, if we are a Tigger or an Eeyore. These are two characters from the children’s book, Winnie the Pooh. Tigger is the more energetic and confident character while Eeyore is the shy and pessimistic one. Dr. Cardon stressed to the Honors students to try to strive to be a Tigger and never give up, no matter the obstacles in their paths.

Also during the event, the group voted on which speaker they would like to hear at the Fall Open Meeting. The students also suggested and voted on possible Honors classes to be offered for Spring 2009. Likewise, possible Honors events were suggested by everyone who had ideas for next fall.

If you wish to have a say in the planning of what goes on in the Honors College, come to the next meeting in the Fall. It is guaranteed to be a good time. Between the speaker and the ice cream, you won’t be disappointed.
