Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do

On Thursday, February 26th, thirteen Honors students took part in a combined Tae Kwon Do and self defense workshop. The idea for this event was spurred by Honors student Teddy Drelles, whose mother owns the Blackbelt Tae Kwon Do Centers.

Teddy’s mother, Master Barbara Mineo, began the event with a demonstration. She was accompanied by an instructor who helped with the self defense portion of the workshop. The first hour was devoted to Tae Kwon Do and the last half hour to self defense. The Honors students warmed up by performing sit-ups and push-ups and jogging around the room. Then, Master Mineo taught them the basic stance as well as the general placement of the arms and fists.

She created a fun environment by incorporating various toys into the workshop. For example, the Honors students were separated into two groups  where they proceeded to kick objects held between the instructor’s hand. Master Mineo also threw balls at the Honors students so they could practice defending themselves from an attack. Similarly, students used a prop knife to learn how to counteract a knife attack.

At the end of the event, Master Mineo generously offered each Honors student a free month trial at any Blackbelt Tae Kwon Do Center.
