Student Staff/Work-Study Positions

Desk Assistant

Position Description
The Desk Assistant (DA) is an on-campus student position for the Office of Housing & Residential Life. DAs maintain the community desks located in each residence hall and the mailrooms in 33 Beekman, 55 John and 182 Broadway. The primary duties of the DA also include administering desk procedures, enforcing guest policies, assisting students who are locked-out of their rooms, and providing other assistance and resources to students, parents and staff. The desk attendant staff also sorts, logs and distributes mail and other deliveries.

Availability
Must be available for mandatory staff training on August 28-29, 2017 and available to work as scheduled from September 5, 2017 through May 12, 2018.

Hours
The desks operate between 8:00 am and 2:00 am daily. Each scheduled shift is 3-hours.

Work Study Required
The position is open to all students; work study is accepted but not required.

Office Assistant

Position Description
The Office Assistant (OA) is a work-study position for the Office of Housing & Residential Life. The OA supports the department’s mission by assisting with the daily operations of the office and providing quality service to the students. The OA serves as resource person by helping students with their housing related questions, referring them to the appropriate staff member and collaborating with other University departments. The OA also completes typical office tasks such as answering phone calls, filing documents, and working on other ad hoc projects as assigned by housing professional staff.

Availability
Must be available for mandatory staff training on August 29-30, 2017 and available to work as scheduled from September 5, 2017 through May 12, 2018.

Hours
The office is open each weekday during the regular business hours of  9:00 am and 5:00 pm, excluding university holidays and closures.

Work Study Required
The position is open to all students; work study is accepted but not required.

Senior Desk Assistant

Position Description
The Senior Desk Assistant (SDA) is a student leadership position for the Office of Housing & Residential Life. The SDA supports the department’s mission by assisting with the daily operations of the community desks and mail rooms and supervision of the desk attendant student staff. Each SDA is responsible for one of the following assignments: scheduling, payroll,  and staff performance and recognition. The staff are also individually and collectively responsible for the following:

  • Check SDA email account daily
  • Be available for OHRL fall and spring training and OHRL banquet
  • Work fall opening weekend
  • Be available during OHRL common hours on Fridays from 1pm-5pm
  • Prepare community desks for opening
  • Participate in on-call duty rotation
  • Assist with departmental functions

Requirements
To be elegible for the SDA position, candidates must have previously worked as a desk assistant for at least one semester, live on-campus in a university residence hall, maintain a 2.75 overall GPA, not currently be on probation for any job performance issue or university policy violation, and be available for training and assignments as scheduled. SDA staff is also limited to registering for no more than two night classes per semester and working no more than 10 hours outside of the Office of Housing and Residential Life, unless otherwise approved by supervisor. 

Availability
Must be available to attend the OHRL student staff training, beginning August 15, 2017. Must have adequate availability to complete tasks as assigned during the academic year.

Hours
Work hours vary depending on assigned tasks and rotating on-call duty schedule. Attendance to a weekly staff meeting each Friday from 1pm-3pm is also required.
