Room Selection: Gender Neutral Housing
Gender Neutral Housing
In keeping with the mission of Pace University to promote and support diversity, the Office of Housing and Residential Life in New York City will offer Gender Neutral Housing options for the 2013-2014 academic year. This process seeks to provide a living environment welcoming to all gender identities; one not limited by the traditional gender binary. Gender Neutral Housing allows for same-gender, opposite-gender, non-gender or other-gender identities to live together in a Platonic setting, regardless of biological sex in an environment in which they feel safe and supported.
Gender Neutral Housing participants must commit to maintaining an inclusive and welcoming living environment free of discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. Each resident accepted to live in Gender Neutral Housing must agree to the Gender Neutral Housing Agreement.
Also, to help enhance and progress the gender neutral housing initiative at Pace University, participants must agree to take part in a feedback process by participating in occasional surveys and completing an exit interview.
Students interested in Gender Neutral Housing must submit an application to the Office of Housing and Residential Life. The application process also requires that a student’s parent/guardian submit their endorsement of the arrangement or that the student complete an interview with housing staff.
Interviews will be scheduled and conducted as needed. Each application will be reviewed and a decision will be made to approve or deny the request. Gender Neutral Housing is not guaranteed to any student. Notifications will be delivered to students’ Pace University e-mail accounts.
Approval for Gender Neutral Housing is not designed to provide students with a room selection advantage with respect to building selection. For this reason, students approved for Gender Neutral Housing will be limited to the following buildings, based on their room selection numbers:
- 7.0+ 182 Broadway, Fulton Hall, 55 John Street, St. George (if available)
- 4.0—6.999 182 Broadway, 55 John Street, St. George (if available)
- 0—3.999 182 Broadway (triples only), 55 John Street, St. George (if available)
Students approved for Gender Neutral Housing will be required to schedule an appointment with the director of housing to select their housing during the Special Accommodations room selection period (April 4 and 5) prior to online room selection, and must attend that appointment in order to secure their housing assignment. Students who apply for Gender Neutral Housing and are not approved may still participate in the general online room selection process.
Late applications, cancellations and transfer requests will be considered, however in the event that these special requests cannot be accommodated, students will be placed in a standard non-gender neutral space.
Students interested in Gender Neutral Housing should contact Josh Chicko at the Office of Housing and Residential Life by calling (212) 346-1295 or sending an e-mail to jchicko@pace.edu.
