There are certain IRS requirements that affect your enrollment in the medical and dental plans. Specifically, you cannot change your coverage decisions during a calendar year unless you have a qualifying change in your family status such as:
  • Gaining or losing a dependent through marriage, divorce, birth, or death;
  • A dependent child reaching the age where he or she is no longer eligible for coverage;
  • A change in your spouse’s employment status.

The family status change must be relevant to the new decision you wish to make. For instance, if you initially do not enroll your four and six year old children for medical coverage and then you later have a new baby, you could enroll the new baby in the plan. But the new baby’s birth would have no effect on your ability to enroll your other two older children at the same time.

You may add or drop a dependent from your medical or dental coverage if one of these events affects that person’s eligibility. However, you must notify Human Resources of the change in your family status and complete a New Enrollment form(s) within 31 days after the change occurs. If you wait longer, you will need to wait until the next annual enrollment before making any changes.
