The holiday season is upon us – a festive time of year with many interesting contrasts: joyful celebration vs. quiet reflection, the hustle & bustle with end of year deadlines (and shopping!) vs. connecting with friends and family and delicious, traditional indulgences vs. maintaining wellness goals or looking ahead to New Year’s intentions. It is hard to find time and energy for “wellness” and it is tempting to forget about it for a few weeks. This month’s campaign is meant to ensure that personal wellness is on everyone’s to-do list this holiday season and challenges us to prevent adding on a few extra pounds that will take months to work off. Included is valuable information on personal weight assessment, the proper nutrition and activity levels required for achieving a healthy weight, and how to beat the holiday blues. Eat, drink, be merry and well!
Assess Your Weight
Are you concerned that enjoying the holidays will sabotage your weight loss accomplishments over the last year or make your New Year’s intentions for better health that much harder to achieve? There is no better time than right now to do a personal assessment of your weight so that you can work towards achieving and maintaining the health and fitness level you’ve been working towards or thinking about. Maintain Your Weight Part I (Nutrition)
Now that you have assessed your current body weight, it is time to start thinking about how to nourish your body with healthy food amidst all the tempting food at holiday parties, treats from family, and cocktails and warm beverages shared with friends! Maintain Your Weight Part II (Physical Activity)
As you enjoy some of the great holiday treats without going overboard, a little physical activity will help keep holiday stress to a minimum, your energy up, and your weight under control. Try going for a walk before holiday get-togethers, sign-up friends and family for a holiday-themed run or community activity, or maybe add an extra workout or two if you’re taking time off during the holidays. Manage Holiday Depression & Stress
Despite your best intentions to be healthy and well, it seems this time of year encompasses all sorts of triggers, or stressors, which temp us to overindulge or stop taking care of ourselves. Pressures related to finances, extended family, loss of loved ones or ending of relationships, job-related, or weather-induced can be challenging. If you’re dreading the upcoming holidays are find yourself filled with the holiday blues, contact your HR department to see if you have access to an Employee Assistance Program (free, private, short-term counseling!) and read “Battling Holiday Depression and Stress” for tips on coping with what can be a difficult time of year.
