Although Pace University is located in a major metropolitan area, it is prudent that plans are developed to continue maintain technology operations in the event of a localized disaster, or other, interruption to business. To that end, ITS has established a number of resources to assist the University in maintaining operations and key technology resources.

Backup Server Facility:
A backup server facility has been established at the One Pace Plaza campus. This facility houses a small number of servers that are able to accommodate basic and limited operations of our key University systems.

The systems available at the backup facility are: 

  • Microsoft Exchange (email, calendar, contacts)
  • Blackboard Learning Management System
  • Banner ERP System with BASIC functionality. 
    • Third party products and additional Banner modules (including Adirondack Housing, Banner Document Management Suite, LDI for eProcurement, and others) are NOT currently available at the facility.
  • Pace Portal (effective October 1, 2010)
  • Blackberry Enterprise Server (effective October 1, 2010)

The backup server facility maintains a current backup (“hot backup”) of the mission critical systems listed above. The backup facility will be activated during events where it is expected that our main server facility in Briarcliff would be offline for a significant amount of time. ITS leadership, in consultation with University leadership, will determine when it is appropriate to activate the backup facility. If it is determined that the main server facility will be out-of-service for a prolonged amount of time, additional resources will be procured to restore the remainder of online systems and servers over a period of time.  

Once the main server facility in Briarcliff is operational again, periods of downtime (possibly lasting 6-8 hours) for all major systems will be required to transfer data from the backup site to the main servers. This downtime will be scheduled to have as minimal an impact as possible on University operations.

Telephone Systems:
Each Pace campus contains its own standalone telephony system. An event on one campus should not affect operation of the system on another campus. In the event of a prolonged power outage, battery backup and generator power will be provided to keep the telephony system operational as long as possible. In the event of a prolonged outage at the Briarcliff campus, the University’s switchboard operation will be relocated to the backup switchboard facility at One Pace Plaza. Phone extensions on one campus can be forwarded to other campuses during times of prolonged outages.

Off-site status page:
ITS has developed a status web page that is hosted on off-site servers. The address of this website is http://bit.ly/pacestatus. During prolonged outages or other major events, updates will be posted to this page on a regular basis. The Pace community is urged to bookmark this link in office and home computers as well as PDAs so it will be easy to access during an emergency.

Emergency Notification System:
PaceAlert is the Pace University emergency notification system for faculty, staff, students and other members of the Pace University community. It delivers time-sensitive emergency notifications via telephone (cellular or landline), e-mail and text messaging to all members of the Pace University community who have signed up and provided their information. To register, visit http://alert.pace.edu.

PaceAlert will be used only when there is a campus closing, severe threat to public safety and health of the entire campus community which has not been contained or controlled, and when immediate action is required on the part of the recipient group(s), (e.g.; chemical spills impacting public health, school closing, tornado warnings, active shooters, etc.). Once the situation receives an “all clear” by the proper authorities then this information will be posted on the Pace University Web site at http://www.pace.edu.

The campus alert system will not be used for non-emergency notifications such as lane closures, routine crime updates, localized building emergencies, situations that have been contained or where a threat does not exist, rumor control, and situations where notification is merely a convenience or when Pace University’s main web site is the most appropriate communication method. The campus alert system will not replace Pace University’s main web site http://www.pace.edu for non-urgent messages. The PaceAlert system will be tested twice a year during the spring and fall semesters.
