Powering Down Your PC

Pace University students, faculty and staff, in our residence halls, offices and computing labs, can help conserve fossil fuels by simply powering off your personal computers (PCs) when not in use.

There are more than 660 million personal computer users worldwide. Estimates are that over 30 billion kilowatt-hours of energy are wasted annually because many of these PCs are not shut down or hibernated at the end of the day or when not in use. Millions of computers are left on 24 hours a day doing absolutely nothing for at least half of those hours—except burning fossil fuels making the electricity to power the systems!

Pace University has long taken an active role in conserving fossil fuels as a “green university”. All computers purchased have the Energy Star compliance label—certification that each PC is designed to further reduce power consumption and energy costs, right out of the box. This is not enough—consider shutting down your PCs when not in use.
