To increase security, Information Technology Services recommends using an encrypted secure communications protocol called Secure Socket Layer (SSL) for all e-mail clients. SSL allows for e-mail messages from your computer to the mail server to be encrypted when you read, download, and send e-mail messages. In addition, passwords are also encrypted to strengthen security.
To avoid experiencing any interruptions in your ability to receive and send e-mail via the Exchange server, we recommend that you configure your e-mail client program now to support SSL security. This applies to all desktop e-mail clients regardless of whether you use IMAP or POP protocol to get e-mail.
Click here to see documentation to assist you in configuring the SSL setting in several common e-mail clients listed below:
- Apple Mail version 4 [Snow Leopard]
- Apple Mail version 2 [Tiger]
- Entourage 2004
- Entourage 2008
- Outlook Express 6
- Mozilla Thunderbird 2
- Windows Live Mail
Please note: If you are using Outlook with IMAP or POP, we recommend reconfiguring Outlook to use Exchange. If you prefer to continue using Outlook (or another e-mail client) with IMAP or POP settings, you will need to ensure that you have enabled SSL in your connection settings. Please see the SSL configuration document for instructions on how to set up the SSL settings.
Stay tuned for updates and notices regarding the upgrade! You can visit the ITS Exchange 2010 Upgrade page for more details.
