Welcome back! We are beginning a new academic year and a new semester—and it’s certain to be even better than the one before! With students and faculty returning to campus, we want to update you on some of the IT enhancements over that past year that will make academic life a little easier. Please take a moment to read about the highlights of these enhancements and services in the articles below.

Renovations and Equipment Updates for Students, Faculty and Staff
As ITS continues to improve and enhance our spaces and technology, many improvements were made over the summer.
Classroom/Lecture Halls Updates
The Education Media Department has completed a series of technology upgrades across all campuses. New items include the installation of seven new UB-T880W Panaboards, a revolutionary multi-touch interactive whiteboard with a durable surface. Unlike other systems currently available on the market, this surface will remain particularly durable across a long period of time. This new tool will allow Pace students and faculty to work with the latest technology solutions for a richer learning experience. Check out this video  for a demonstration of the Panaboard.
In addition to installing new Panaboards, the ITS team worked on other enhancement projects across all campuses. On the Pleasantville campus the Goldstein fitness center was outfitted with a brand new state of the art sound system – this system can handle anything from sporting events to major events such as commencement and convocation. Also new on the Pleasantville campus is a movie screening room in Miller 30, equipped with features like blackout shades, 7.1 surround sound system and a high end film grade projector this room is perfect for any film study or movie specific course. On the New York City campus the Gym was outfitted with a brand new sound system – this system will handle major events such as Orientation, Commencement Dinners and the many Student Life events. Also, The Student Union was upgraded to a smart space with 2 projectors, 2 screens, 2- 55” LED Displays and improved sound system, with everything controlled by a Crestron touch panel.
CRC Lab Renovation Update
The Computer Resources Centers in both NY 1 Pace Plaza and PLV Willcox Hall received a much needed face lift over the summer! PLV now has a common space that allows for collaborate work for courses and projects and NY’s transformed appearance will make users feel more comfortable and at ease when using our facility. MyPace Mobile App for Students, Faculty and Staff
ITS along with the Mobile Apps Group (MAG) has worked to continuously improve Pace University’s mobile app. The Phase 4 update is now available in the app stores and includes new modules for PLV Master Plan, Blackboard, Each One Reach One and much more for a total of 24 modules! New Wireless Technology for Students, Faculty and Staff
Starting mid-May of Spring 2013, we began the migration to the new, more-robust, Cisco wireless technology. Be on the lookout for signs and handouts in key locations and learn more about setting up wireless and the migration  by visiting our website..
Users connecting to wireless in the buildings or specific locations that have migrated will see the network information below:
- Pace_Connect will now be called PACE-OPEN
- Pace_Secure will now be called PACE-WIRELESS
Important Note: It is strongly recommended that all users connecting to the new wireless network register their devices in order to receive proper permissions and network functionality. This is done by following the steps when connecting to PACE-OPEN .
Wireless Connectivity Sessions
ITS will be holding two sessions for students on the wireless network on our campuses (PLV on Monday 9/16 and NY on Wednesday 9/18). Keep an eye out for more details and join us to see how to set up the wireless networks on your devices!
IT Security Awareness for Students, Faculty and Staff
Computer security is an issue that everyone faces, not just IT. What does this mean for the Pace user community? It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that we keep our institution and personal data secure. Therefore, it is vital that users across the University understand how to keep their devices and data secure. Staying vigilant and taking key precautionary steps in everyday routines, are practices that must be implemented to help safeguard personal information and the institution’s data. ITS will be launching a security awareness program in the coming year in addition to implementing various best practice security protocols. Security changes such as the 15 minute session lockout is to ensure proper procedures are being enforced in order to minimize risk of exposing confidential data and to stay compliant with various standards and regulations, such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS). This is a reminder to the campus community to be vigilant in what emails you open and what links you click on. Spam emails may periodically end up in your mailbox. These types of messages may try to disguise themselves as authentic emails, by spoofing “From” addresses from people we know or known companies. They will ask you to send them personal informational because something might be wrong with your account, such as exceeded storage or insufficient information. Some messages might also ask you to help various causes by donating money or sending banking information.
It is important that you DO NOT respond to the request in the email as they are spam. In addition, for any suspicious email messages, DO NOT click on any of the links, attachments, or respond with any type of personal information.
How do I keep from falling victim to a spam message?
To keep your information safe, never share your account information and/or passwords with anyone. Legitimate sources such as ITS or Pace University will never ask for your personal information through email. Delete the email message from your Inbox and then permanently remove it from your Deleted Items folder.

Migrating Emails from Google to Exchange for Students
ITS is continuously revising the technologies available to ensure that we provide the best services to our community. Over the past 4 years we have been evaluating our transition to Google for student email services. Based on research, feedback, and focus groups conducted over the past few years, ITS has decided to transition student email from Google to Exchange. The benefits of its integration with Exchange and calendaring are among some of the main reasons we have decided on this migration. (Please note: Law School Students will not be affected by this change as they are already on Exchange.) We have begun Phase 1 this summer where all new incoming students registering for courses as of May 25th, will have email accounts on Exchange while we work on a migration and transition plan for current students. New students received information on Exchange during their Orientation sessions. They can access email accounts in the same way Faculty and Staff do, which is via the Outlook Web App . RA Duty Log for Housing and Students
ITS worked with Residential Life to develop a RA Duty Log system which allows RA’s to record information on their rounds. These reports get submitted to the Resident Directors for each building every evening and can be reviewed and commented for the RAs. The form can be found at http://raduty.com .
ePortfolio Upgrade for Students and Faculty
Mahara version 1.7 is now up and running at https://eportfolio.pace.edu ! New features include retractable blocks, a new way of accessing pages made available to users by others, and the ability to add journal entries directly from an ePortfolio page. Respondus is Now Available for Students and Faculty
Respondus is a secure online exam solution that is embedded in Blackboard. The Lockdown Browser componentlocks down the testing environment by restricting students from accessing other websites, course content, and many other functions, in order to provide a secure online exam environment. The Lockdown Browser is available for all Blackboard courses. The link to download the Lockdown Browser is available on the My Resource page in Blackboard under the “Services” section. The Monitor component adds an extra layer of security for online students by requiring students to record themselves taking the exam via webcam. Classroom Technology Training Sessions for Faculty
To get faculty acquainted with the latest classroom technologies, Ed Media held a series of technology sessions in August for Lubin, Dyson, and the College of Health Professions. Sessions for the School of Education and Seidenberg will be held in the Fall. If you missed one of these session and would still like training contact Educational Media Services .
BIO Advisor Database Utility for Faculty in PLV
ITS worked with the Biology in Pleasantville to create an online database utility for faculty in the department to track BIO majors (both current and alumni). This system facilitates correspondence between advisors and students, as well as providing a back-end system for reporting and archiving. It replaces a manual paper-based process which will now increase efficiencies.
Tuition Remissions Paperless Initiative for Faculty and Staff
As the University strives to become more paperless in its processes, ITS has collaborated with Human Resources to develop a phased project plan for tuition remission forms. Web forms have been created to replace PDF files that were initially used. These new web forms will allow individuals to fill out the request online and obtain necessary management approvals eliminating the need to print and submit paper forms. In future phases we are looking for more integration opportunities with Payroll and OSA. Utilizing Your Technology Fee
Pace University assesses a Technology Fee to ensure students have access to the latest instructional technology resources available. All revenue generated from the technology fee goes directly towards funding instructional technology initiatives that are focused on enhancing the student learning experience. A committee comprised of students and staff will vote to determine which discretionary initiatives receive funding each year, with annual reports to be provided to the Pace community. ITS has worked on some form modifications for the Student Technology Fee submissions.
