WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The Latin American
Law Students Association at Pace Law School will honor Juan A.
Figueroa, president and general counsel of the Puerto Rican Legal
Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF), at 6 p.m., Friday, September 15,
during an annual dinner to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Figueroa
will be presented with the Adelante Award in recognition of his
outstanding accomplishments and contributions as a leader in the
Latino Community and in the legal profession.

Figueroa joined PRLDEF in 1993 and became a
leading advocate on many issues that effect the Latino community,
including environmental justice, race discrimination, education rights
and access to affordable housing. Founded in 1972, the Puerto Rican
Legal Defense and Education Fund is a national civil rights
organization that works to secure, promote and protect the civil and
human rights of the Puerto Rican and wider Latino community through
litigation, policy analysis and education.
Figueroa was also instrumental in founding the
National Hispanic Media Coalition, New York Chapter, comprising more
than 30 members representing Latino leaders and journalists. And in
1998 he successfully led PRLDEF through a merger with the Institute
for Puerto Rican Policy, adding a public policy unit to PRLDEF's
Litigation and Education Division.
Prior to his appointment at PRLDEF, Figueroa was
elected to the Connecticut General Assembly as the first Puerto Rican
State Representative from the Third District in Hartford, Conn. Prior
to that, he worked as assistant attorney general representing the
Department of Environmental Protection, Income Maintenance and Human
Resources. He also served as a staff attorney for the Connecticut
Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and as a clerk for the
Superior Court Judges.
Figueroa received a Juris Doctor degree from the
University of Santa Clara in California and a Bachelor of Arts degree
from Macalester College in Minnesota. He serves on the board of
directors of numerous national and local institutions, including the
National Puerto Rican Coalition, America's Charities, the North East
Citizen Action Resource Center, City University of New York School of
Law, Macalester College and Democracy works.
The Latin American Law Students Association at
Pace Law School works together to enhance the educational experience
and the professional pursuits of law students committed to diversity
in legal education.
