WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The Latin American Law Students Association at Pace Law School will honor Juan A. Figueroa, president and general counsel of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF), at 6 p.m., Friday, September 15, during an annual dinner to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will be held at the Law School's White Plains campus, 78 North Broadway. For more information or for reservations, call (914) 422-4136.

Figueroa joined PRLDEF in 1993 and became a leading advocate on many issues that effect the Latino community, including environmental justice, race discrimination, education rights and access to affordable housing. Figueroa was also instrumental in founding the National Hispanic Media Coalition, New York Chapter, comprising more than 30 members representing Latino leaders and journalists. And in 1998 he successfully led PRLDEF through a merger with the Institute for Puerto Rican Policy, adding a public policy unit to PRLDEF's Litigation and Education Division.

Prior to his appointment at PRLDEF, Figueroa was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly as the first Puerto Rican State Representative from the Third District in Hartford, Conn. Prior to that, he worked as assistant attorney general representing the Department of Environmental Protection, Income Maintenance and Human Resources. He also served as a staff attorney for the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and as a clerk for the Superior Court Judges.

Figueroa received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Santa Clara in California and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Macalester College in Minnesota. He serves on the board of directors of numerous national and local institutions, including the National Puerto Rican Coalition, America's Charities, the North East Citizen Action Resource Center, City University of New York School of Law, Macalester College and Democracy works.

The Latin American Law Students Association at Pace Law School works together to enhance the educational experience and the professional pursuits of law students committed to diversity in legal education.
