Rye Neck High School Students Donate
Handmade Quilts to The Women's Justice Center
Six
rising seniors at Rye Neck High School in Mamaroneck, NY have
chosen to creatively fulfill their school's community service
requirement by making quilts for the benefit of others.
Caitlan Werner, Diana Sterk, Erin Reid, Ikuko Hamada, Katie
Canonico and Rebecca Barclay of Mamaroneck have each spent close
to 50 hours on this project under the direction of Carol Sterk and
have produced 6 crib quilts, which the girls have chosen to donate
to the Women's Justice Center of Pace University Law School in
White Plains. The
quilts will be auctioned at a fundraiser, the proceeds used to pay
for legal services for the center's domestic violence clients.
The
girls represent the next generation in a long tradition of women
sustaining each other both emotionally and materially through
their quilting. They
found time to complete their quilts despite demanding academic
schedules, varsity athletic competition and a host of other school
activities. Diana,
Erin and Caitlan were members of the Rye Neck High School
Westchester County Championship 2001 Mock Trial Team and had a
special interest in contributing to a law-based program.
The students hope to complete at least a few more quilts
before the Women's Justice Center's auction early in 2002.
The
Center will auction these uniquely gorgeous quilts at our next
dinner/silent auction, which will be in Spring 2002.
Pace Women's Justice Center, relies 100% on grants and
donations to support its work of annually educating dozens of law
students, representing over 900 battered women, and training
thousands.
