Comments About JJLS

"I would like to take some time to thank [the professors] for what I consider to have been the finest educational experience in all my three years of law school: The JJLS Clinic. . . . . Nowhere outside the Clinic would I have had the opportunity to learn about initial client interviews, discovery, drafting pleadings, and scores of other fundamentals essential to good lawyering."

-- Class of 1993, now in small law firm

"As an intern with JJLS, I dealt with numerous requests for legal assistance from the public as well as working on several very interesting cases. . . . These inquiries provided me with constant exposure to diverse areas of law: Social Security benefits; labor and employment law; educational rights; civil rights; and legal and medical negligence. Being forced to shift gears on a moment's notice helped me develop my analytical and organizational skills. . . . Each inquiry involves a different person, with different needs and legal problems. All need to be treated in a serious manner, with respect for the concerns and feelings of the individual. Yet I have learned that a lawyer must adapt to the client as the relationship develops. This is perhaps the most valuable learning: how to listen to what the client considers important. This enables you to start to develop a view of the problem from the client's perspective. My work at JJLS has been an invaluable experience."

-- Class of 1994, now in medium-sized law firm

"[At JJLS], I was exposed to the intricacies and difficulties of trying to represent under-represented people and ideas. I found out just how hard it can be to enforce safety regulations in American workplaces. I represented the widow of a construction worker killed at work in the OSHA enforcement proceeding. In addition, I had the opportunity to prepare testimony for an oversight hearing on OSHA enforcement in the U.S. House of Representatives. . . . Each of these experiences has taught me more than the skills necessary to fight through the bramble bush we call the law. Representing the poor, it is not hard to find yourself surrounded on all sides by impenetrable thicket without enough room to swing the machete. I thank my professors and the experience in the Clinic at Pace for teaching me so many new ways to swing the machete . . . and for the expert guidance that allowed me to make a difference rather than give up against enormous odds."

"[Lawyer's Name]'s visit to our home last Sunday was a memorable one for us . . . . He handed us a check in the sum of $10,000 representing a victory against [a major health insurance company]. . . . Would that there was a forum to publicize the achievements of John Jay Legal Services, Inc. . . . . We wish you continued success with others who are by good fortune brought to your attention."

"I would like to thank you for assigning [Lawyer's Name] and [Lawyer's Name] to my case. They are both exceptionally professional, yet very warm. For people like myself -- the victims of stalking crimes, etc. -- it is very important that we can feel comfortable talking about what happened to us. They made me feel very comfortable and confident that everything will be handled in a professional manner. They explained to me exactly how the law works with harassment cases. They didn't just give me two-line answers. They took the time to explain and answer any questions I had. I learned a lot from them. . . . I'd like to wish them much success in their careers."

- Complainant in a domestic violence case prosecuted by JJLS interns

"I am writing to bring to your attention the exceptional work of two of Pace Law School's third-year students, [who] have worked diligently over the past months to produce legal actions that may ultimately save my life. . . . At the time I first met [the lawyers], the probability of winning my case appeared extremely remote. From the outset, [the interns'] enthusiasm and articulate presentation helped rekindle my nearly extinguished hope. . . . As part of an extraordinary team effort of doctors, lawyers, hospital administrators, and yes, even finally Medicaid administrators, [the interns'] . . . secured funding for my treatment. What appeared virtually hopeless, without precedent, four months ago, now has been legally secured. . . . [The interns] showed deep compassion without losing professional objectivity, and a degree of tenderness that still, today, resonates within my heart."

- Destitute, severely disabled patient for
whom JJLS interns obtained Medicaid approval for necessary care.

"I would like to express my sincere appreciation to you and the student attorneys who worked on my claim against [my brokerage firm].  I am very pleased that we were able to settle the case without going to arbitration and feel that the financial remuneration was fair and equitable.  Please communicate my heartfelt appreciation to  all who worked on my case."

"I know that you and the student attorneys spent an incredible amount of time and energy to settle this case, and I am well aware that I would not have had the chance of getting any reparation from [my brokerage firm] without the assistance of John Jay Legal Services.  Your Clinic provides an invaluable service to people like myself who are unable to retain an attorney either due to lack of funds or because  the size of their case is not large enough to make it feasible to retain outside legal counsel.

Many thanks for a job well done!"

-Small investor, whose retirement account was depleted by a well-known brokerage firm.

"I would like to express the full measure of my appreciation to the students of GULP (Greater Upstate Law Project) at Pace University.
For more than a year I was struggling to receive my Oath of Allegiance from Immigration and Naturalization Service. I appealed for help to some high authority officials including NY senators, congress woman, etc. Many prominent high authority officials tried to help me, however, INS simply ignored their efforts. I couldn't even receive any information on the status of my case

Fortunately, a month ago I received the name and address of GULP, from the Governor George Pataki. I was impressed by the friendly reception, however I was much more impressed at how they forced the INS to find my lost case which INS couldn't find for more than one year. Just yesterday I received the invitation to the Oath of Allegiance ceremony.

Students of Pace University Law School accomplished in one month more than the officials could not accomplish for one year! I greatly appreciate the help of the students who are working for GULP. I especially appreciate (Prof's names) who were handling my case. I wish Pace a bright and prosperous future."

-GULP successfully  expedited naturalization process.

"Please be advised that I received your letter along with a copy of my motion. I read it and thought it was very well put together. How can I extend my sincerest gratitude for the dedication and effort all of you took the time out to place in for me."

"I even shared it with my mother who's sick with cancer, and she to was jolly about it. So was my wife and kids who all hope and pray I be bless to remain in the United States for support in every aspect a son, husband, and father can give. Thank you so much! and yes! I understand that it's not over yet. Still, I thank you and your staff for your time, patience, efforts, care, and concerns to see that  I remain at liberty with my family here in the U.S. once parole, bless and reward you all a 1000 times over."

-A prisoner whose removal the IJC successfully contested in 2005.

" I'm writing you a letter of thanks for the excellent job your staff did in settling my case with US Securities. Without you, I would have been in a much worse position. It truly made my life a bit better."

-Pleased investor who settled his claim for unauthorized trading against his broker.
