Our Mission:
Functions of the Center:
- Serve as a clear and visible sign of university-sanctioned support for the LGBTQ and ally community.
- Create a welcoming environment for all people interested in developing their understanding of LGBTQ and ally issues.
- Advocacy, activism and community building with a focus on diversity, multicultural issues and social justice
- Education and outreach on the isolating impact of gender and sexuality norming.
- Help students, staff and faculty to build conscientious communities of care, inclusion, support, and trust.
- Recognize and explore the differences in ability, age, ethnicity, gender, health, language, national origin, race, religion, and socioeconomic among the LGBTQ and ally student, staff and faculty population.
- Celebrate how differences in the LGBTQ and ally student staff and faculty population can enrich campus and local communities.
- Provide direct service to LGBTQ students, staff, faculty and their allies in the forms of advisement, advocacy, career networking, referral services, education and training, event sponsorship and co-sponsorship, leadership development, and peer mentorship programs.
Discussion Groups at the Center:
The Center hosts weekly LGBTQA Topic-Related Discussion Groups around issues relating to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning and Ally individuals. Some of the topics include Coming Out, Relationships, What it means to be an Ally, Dating, Examining Social Identities as they relate to LGBTQA Relationships, Family Dynamics, Cultural Difference in a Queer Relationship, Safety, Advocacy, Equality, Gender, Race and much more. Center Discussion groups are held every Friday at 12pm in the Center Space.
Volunteer and Internship Opportunities:
The Center was built through the volunteer efforts of the Pace Community. Students, staff, faculty and alumni dedicated their time to creating this space and advocating for staff and programatic funds. This Center Functions on the principle of Social Justice and a shared interest in Community Wellness and Health. Students are welcome to inquire about volunteer and internship opportunities with the Center.
Volunteer through The Hub @ the LGBTQA Center: On campus you can join The Hub, a student volunteer program designed to create a unique volunteer experience for each individual based on interests, skill sets and campus needs. The majority of the volunteer work will be completed on campus, and will assist in creating environments in which all community members feel safe. This volunteer experience can fulfill your AOK 1 Volunteer Requirement for specific courses. To find out more information, please contact lgbtqacenter@pace.edu
