On April 4th @ 3:30PM, the incredible, dynamic, and brilliant, Dr. Kevin Nadal will be coming to Pace University to discuss his new book: "That's So Gay: Microaggressions and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community." People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) experience subtle forms of discrimination, also known as microaggressions. Microaggressions are commonplace interactions that occur in a wide variety of social settings, including school or the workplace, among friends and family, and even among other LGBT people. These accumulated experiences are associated with feelings of victimization, suicidal thinking, and higher rates of substance abuse, depression, and other health problems among members of the LGBT community. In this book, Kevin Nadal provides a thought-provoking review of the literature on discrimination and microaggressions toward LGBT people. The generous use of case examples makes the book ideal for gender studies courses and discussion groups. Each case is followed by analysis of the elements involved in microaggressions and discussion questions for the reader to reflect upon.Read more about Kevin here and mark your CALENDARS!!! http://thefilam.net/archives/9953

World's Aids Day
Saturday Dec. 1st
More than 90,000 people are currently living with HIV in the UK and globally an estimated 33.3 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV. World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education. World AIDS Day is an opportunity for you to learn the facts about HIV and put your knowledge into action. If you understand how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, and the reality of living with HIV today - you can use this knowledge to take care of your own health and the health of others, and ensure you treat everyone living with HIV fairly, and with respect and understanding. Click here to find out the facts. You can also show your support for people living with HIV on World AIDS Day by wearing a red ribbon, the international symbol of HIV awareness. World AIDS Day is also a great opportunity to raise money for NAT (National AIDS Trust) and show your support for people living with HIV. If you feel inspired to hold an event, bake sale or simply sell red ribbons, click here to get started. If you'd like to see what other events are taking place — click here and find out more.

Telling Gender Stories: Parents, Physicians and the Transgender Child
Tuesday, February 28th, @3:30PM, ROOM TBA. A discussion on gender with Tey Meadow, Princeton Society Fellow. Popular news media, physicians, politicians, and parents are all talking about transgender children. They are puzzling out what makes some small minority of very young boys and girls depart, sometimes radically, from the type of gender behaviors other children seem to engage in naturally and automatically. They are describing and explaining and analyzing which children are actually transgender, which will turn out to be gay or lesbian adults, and what the proper individual and institutional responses to childhood gender nonconformity should be. They are wondering aloud whether transgender children represent the eradication of gender as we know it, or continued capitulation to patriarchal notions of gender difference. The greater availability of medical technologies that suspend and forestall puberty in transgender children render these discussions ever more consequential, and lead to an intensified focus on predicting just who individual children will become as adults. In this talk, based on an ethnographic investigation of the transgender child, I examine the work done by parents and physicians to manage the uncertainties of gender, of childhood and of this unique historical moment.
