COUNTRY INFORMATION – INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOKS AND WEBSITES

The Henry Birnbaum Library in New York contains a wealth of material that can be used to do country research on a wide variety of topics. However, it is difficult to gain access to this information relying solely on the library’s online catalog. This bibliography is intended to assist the researcher by bringing together and organizing some of our more valuable sources. Annotations are provided for some of the titles. To gain the most complete picture possible, the researcher should consult and evaluate a variety of sources. Many of the following titles also contain useful bibliographies.

A one-stop resource for country statistics on “everything and anything.” You can generate maps and graphs comparing countries using a large databank of statistics. Or select one of several ready-made ranking lists such as “most populous,” “most murderous,” “most educated,” “most taxed,” etc.

A non-profit web project dedicated to improving cross-cultural understanding and international awareness. Includes history, statistics, news articles, maps, city information, links to government web sites, arts institutions, universities, business resources and much more. Also has a listing of historical country names.

This is a comprehensive compendium of comparable data useful for the analysis of socio-economic development on the world, regional and national levels. Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations. Detroit: Gale Group, 2004. (Ref G63 .W67)
Describes in detail the UN, countries of the world, and their leaders. Volume 1 covers the structure, history, and purposes of the UN, including detailed analyses of its committees, offices, and issues. Volumes 2-5 are arranged by geographical area and use 50 categories to describe the history, economy, politics, and social progress for each of 194 countries. Volume 6, "World Leaders," provides a biographical profile for the person who heads each nation's government.

An extremely useful series of books on a select list of countries is published by the Library of Congress. Search the LIBROS Pace Library catalog under keyword for COUNTRY STUDY plus NAME OF THE COUNTRY (for example: COUNTRY STUDY AFGHANISTAN) to find the call number of a country study. These in-depth studies include a vast array of topics as well as different kinds of maps. They are shelved in the Birnbaum stacks on the second floor of the library. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development puts out another useful series of studies on countries. Search the LIBROS Pace Library catalog under keyword for OECD Economic Surveys plus NAME OF THE COUNTRY (for example OECD ECONOMIC SURVEYS TURKEY). Current edition is on Reserve. These books include a discussion of recent economic trends, economic policies, short-term projections and the effects of government policies on industrial development. These descriptions are supported by tables which contain extensive economic data including the external and internal debt, lending rates, gross fixed investment by sector, manufacturing, inflation, standard of living, agriculture and foreign direct investment.

There are four related series of books by Greenwood Press under the series titles: CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF AFRICA; CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF ASIA; CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF EUROPE; and CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN. To find these books for specific countries, search the LIBROS catalog under Title for CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF followed by the name of the country, for example: CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF VIETNAM or CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF SPAIN. You may also search by the series title, for example: CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF AFRICA. This will allow you to see a list of the series books available in the library.
