Chronologies and Events

**In the reference collection, you will find books with timelines, chronologies, and lists of events or people who made news in a particular year. These are just a few examples.

American Decades Birnbaum REF E169.12. A419  Each volume examines a decade, beginning with a chronology of world events by year, followed by chapters on the arts, business, faction, government, etc.

Annual Obituary    Birnbaum REF CT120 A56   Volumes 1980-1993 for this title which provides, in date order, obituaries of important people who died each year. 

Britannica Book of the Year  Birnbaum Encyclopedia Case  Includes a monthly chronology of important events of the year, features articles on some of the biggest world events, and articles discussing particular aspects of culture such as environment, literature, music, television and what happened in those arenas during the year.

Chronicle of the 20th Century    Birnbaum REFCB424.C45 1987   Describes with brief articles and timelines significant events for each month from 1900-1986.

World Almanac and Book of Facts  Birnbaum REF AY67 N5 W7  Includes highlights of the year, lists of government officials, and many statistics.  Available in Lexis Nexis (click on Reference).

Dictionaries

**There are many specialized dictionaries that focus on a particular subject and will assist you with names and terms in a field.

Dictionary of First Names  Birnbaum REF CS2367.H32 1990  Defines first (given) names and gives a history of their use and variation across European and Judeo-Christian cultures.

Dictionary of Literary Terms, Revised edition  Birnbaum REF PN41.C83     Provides an alphabetical listing of literary terms, the origin of the terms and sometimes illustrative examples or quotations.

Dictionary of Proper Names  Birnbaum REF CS2367.C3 1994    Defines all types of proper names--corporate, geographic, literary, religious and political.

German American Names  Birnbaum REF CS2487.J66 1990   Gives a history of the usage, construction, and origin of German surnames and an alphabetical list of German-American family names.

Encyclopedias

**When starting a research paper, it is often useful to first consult an encyclopedia. Each entry will provide a brief overview of an event or concept and will often give suggestions for further reading.

Asian American Encyclopedia Birnbaum REF E184.O6 A827 1995   This 6 volume set provides articles on the histories and cultures of Asian Americans with an emphasis on the communities that immigrants have established in the U.S. It also includes background by including articles on the diverse countries of origin.

American Immigrant Cultures: Builders of a Nation  Birnbaum REF E184.A636448 1997   Articles are organized by ethnic group. The second volume includes charts of statistics in the back.

Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History Birnbaum REF E185.E54 1996  In addition to a multitude of biographical sketches, this 5 volume work includes articles on each state and region of the country and tells about the first African-American in the area and how the population has grown and changed.

Encyclopedia of American Social History Birnbaum REFHN57 E58 1993     This works deals with the history of groups--ethnic groups, women, working people and how they relate to one another and how their lives change over time.

Guides to Genealogical Research

Asian American Genealogical Sourcebook Describes genealogy research methods, provides a directory of libraries and archives containing genealogical materials, and describes records specific to Asian Americans. In addition, provides a history of immigration patterns.

Finding Our Fathers: A guidebook to Jewish Genealogy  Birnbaum REF CS21.R58 1997  Besides providing a guide to record research for the US and countries where Jewish immigrants originated from, nearly half the book gives an alphabetical list of Jewish family names with origins.

Gateway to America: Genealogical research in the New York State Library  Birnbaum REF CS42.7 G3 1982 A concise guide to resources available in New York State.

Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives  Birnbaum REF CS68 U52 1982   A guide to federal records, such as passenger lists from American ports, military pension records and American Indian tribal rolls.

How to Find Your Family Roots  Birnbaum REF CS16.B35 A practical guide to tracing ancestors.

If you are using resources from the World Wide Web, it is especially important that you evaluate their accuracy, authority, currency and objectivity. For more information, see our page on Evaluating Resources.

AfricGeneas  http://www.afrigeneas.com  is a site devoted to African American genealogy, to researching African Ancestry in the Americas in particular and to genealogical research and resources in general. It is also an African Ancestry research community featuring the AfriGeneas mail list, the AfriGeneas message boards and daily and weekly genealogy chats.

Ancestralfindings  http://www.ancestralfindings.com/  Provides free research of birth, census, death, land, marriage, military and state record index.

Ancestry.com  http://www.ancestry.com   A commercial site with genealogical information, such as how to search for family records and create a family tree, and many message boards and other ways to share information. Most other features require a paid subscription.

American Family Immigrations History Center http://ellisislandrecords.org Allows visitors to explore the extraordinary collection of immigrants records stored in the Ellis Island Archives.

Cemeteries and Cemetery Records http://interment.net   Provides records of over 2,000 cemeteries all over the world.

Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints   http://familysearch.org  Provides a step-by-step guide to genealogy research, searchable database by last name, and a link to the US social security death index.

Genealogy Gateway   http://www.gengateway.com/   As the name implies, this site is a gateway to research on the internet and contains many links to sites with information on specific communities, states, provinces and ethnic groups.  See the Gateways and Guides links on the left hand side for navigation.

Librarians Index to the Internet http://www.lii.org   Search engine from the  Library of California. All sites are already evaluated. Start with a simple "genealogy" search and begin with the results!

Finding Books in the Pace University Library

You can find books on your topic by searching the online Pace Library Catalog by subject or keyword. Subject searches target the specific Library of Congress Subject Headings that have been assigned to the books that the Pace Library owns.  Unless you know the subject headings that pertain to your topic, you may want to begin with a Keyword search.  Once you have found a source that you find useful, look at the Library of Congress Subject Headings towards the bottom of the catalog record to determine the best terms to use in a Subject search for further materials. Citing Your Sources

Once you have found your information, you will need to cite the sources that you used. The library has prepared some information on citation styles for print and electronic resources.
