The Brain Encyclopedia Birnbaum Ref QP11.E53 1997   
This easy-to-read, comprehensive one-volume set contains information about various aspects of the brain, focusing on “diseases and disorders, structure, and function.” An index, glossary, and appendices are offered.

Communication Disorders Sourcebook    Birnbaum Ref RC423.C644 1996
Sections include deafness and hearing loss, speech & language disorders, voice disorders, and other sensory communication disorders.

Comprehensive Dictionary of Audiology, Illustrated    Birnbaum Ref RF291 .S73 2003
In its second edition, this reference work provides definitions of 7,000 terms related to the field of audiology from a contemporary and historical perspective.

Concise Encyclopedia of Language Pathology    Birnbaum Ref RC423.C656 1999
Contains six sections: Speech & Language in Normal Speakers; General Aspects of Speech  & Language Pathologies; Developmental Speech & Language Pathologies; Acquired Speech Pathologies; Acquired Language Pathologies; and Language Pathology in Neuropsychiatric Disorders.

Dictionary of Communication Disorders    Birnbaum Ref RC423.M597 1997
Provides definitions of commonly used terms for speech and language therapy and related topics. Tests and assessments are included in the appendices.

Encyclopedia of Deafness and Hearing Disorders    Birnbaum Ref RF290 .T93 2000
Presents over 600 entries arranged in alphabetical order on “hearing and hearing loss, treatments, and essential biographical information.” This second edition provides more recent, up-to-date information covering diseases, organizations, associations, and syndromes. Fourteen appendices containing useful resources such as services, groups, camps, training, and information about vital print materials and bibliography follow these entries.

Focuses on speech production. An in-depth overview encompassing multiple aspects of clinical and experimental speech; includes CD-ROM with sample data files.

Handbook of Clinical Audiology     Birnbaum Ref Reserve RF290 .H36 1994
In its fourth edition, this handbook continues to provide comprehensive, timely coverage on the topics of clinical audiology. Physiology of the Ear    Birnbaum Ref QP461.P534 2001
Useful for a brief overview of the auditory system, and for the chapter on  "Neurophysiology of Speech Perception in Normal and Impaired Systems."

Pronouncing Dictionary of American English    Birnbaum Ref Reserve PE1137.K37 1953
Contains pronunciations of terms in American English by means of the letters of the alphabet contained in the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Reference Manual for Communicative Sciences and Disorders: Speech and Language   Birnbaum Ref RC423.K46 1994
A one-volume work offering various types of information from a large number of published sources that are relevant to the contemporary understanding of speech and language.

The American Academy of Audiology is a professional organization for audiologists.  The News and Announcements section of this site includes reports and other publications of interest. 

Clinical Aphasiology Conference http://www.clinicalaphasiology.org
This site is presented by the Clinical Aphasia Conference which sponsors an annual forum for clinicians and researchers engaged in the study and clinical management of persons with acquired neuralgic language disorders.  The site allows a search of abstracts of papers presented at previous forums.

The National Aphasia Association is a nonprofit organization that promotes public education, research rehabilitation and support services to assist people with aphasia and their families.  This site includes Association publications and reprints of articles.

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)  www.nidcd.nih.gov
NIDCD is one of the institutes of the National Institutes of Health.  This institute conducts and supports biomedical and behavioral research and research training in the normal and disordered processes of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language.  This site provides access to publications on aphasia, auditory processing, dysphagia, and hearing loss.

Finding Books in the Pace University Library

In addition to the reference books listed above, the library has many circulating books on speech-related topics. To find circulating books, search the online Pace Library Catalog by subject or keyword. Subject searches target the specific Library of Congress Subject Headings that have been assigned to the books that the Pace Library owns.  Unless you know the subject headings that pertain to your topic, you may want to begin with a Keyword search.

Once you have found a source that you find useful, look at the Library of Congress Subject Headings towards the bottom of the catalog record to determine the best terms to use in a Subject search for further materials.  For additional tips on searching the catalog, see the library's guide to Using the Pace Library Catalog. Finding Journal Articles in Speech-Language Pathology

Here are several databases you can use to find journal articles on your topic. Only the first one is specifically geared towards Speech. Others are geared toward related disciplines, but include several speech-related journals. Following the list of databases is a list of Speech Pathology Journals and where you can find them!

To access library databases: from the Library Home Page, click on Databases. Use the pull-down menus provided to choose a databases to search. If you are off campus, you will need to enter the last seven digits of your library barcode for access. Academic Search Premier
Interdisciplinary databases that provides full text of journals in language and linguistics and the medical sciences.

BasicBIOSIS
Provides basic coverage of the life sciences including medicine, biology, neuroscience, and physiology.

BioDigest
Provides access to non-technical life science information.

CINAHL
Indexing in nursing allied health, biomedical, and consumer health journals. Coverage extends from 1983 to present.

Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library supports Evidence Based Practice in that it provides access to reliable and up-to-date information on the effects of interventions in health care.

Communication & Mass Media Complete
Covers journalism and mass communications studies; contains over 200 full-text titles and additional titles with citations; features articles on language and languages, and speech pathology.

ERIC
Covers education and related fields. Locate journals articles. Back files are available from1966 as well as current issues. Updates occur monthly.

Health Reference Center Academic
Contains many full text articles on health-related topics.

Health Source Nursing Academic
Contains many full text articles on health-related topics.

Medline
Indexes journals published internationally, covering all areas of medicine. Coverage extends from 1966 to the present. Updated daily.

Omnifile Full Text Select
Covers topics such as neuroscience, physiology, medicine, education, language arts, community health, medical care and psychology.

PsycINFO
Covers the literature of psychology and related disciplines from 1887-present. Contains some full-text.

Research Library
Interdisciplinary database containing much full text documents. Emphasis is on speech therapy, speech and disorders.

Scirus.com
A speciality science-only web search engine, Scirus can be used to locate journal articles on the web, along with other science web sites and internet postings.
