This service is divided by industry. Each industry booklet gives an overview of the industry, a forecast with discussion, and a list of the top companies within the industry along with ratios and other statistics for both the industry and individual companies. See specifically the booklets covering “Lodging and Gaming” and “Airlines”.
Dun and Bradstreet/Gale Industry Handbook    Ref Reserve HF5035 .D86 2000 (vols. 1-5; vol. 4 is Entertainment and Hospitality)
This new handbook series has sections which give an industry overview, industry statistics, financial norms, a company directory, ranking, mergers and acquisitions, associations, consultants, trade information sources, and the trade shows.

Focusing on domestic travel and prepared by the Travel Association of America, statistics and tables are given for visitor volume, market share, trip characteristics, and demographics for U.S. resident travel.

Edited by William Theobald, this collection of essays deals with the problems facing the tourism industry. Overcrowding, crime and prostitution, resident-host conflicts, and destruction of natural resources are some of the topics covered.

Statistical Abstract of the United States    Ref HA 202 (1880- ;latest at Ref. Desk and on Reserve)
Annual publication of the U.S. Census Bureau giving the highlights of statistics gathered on a regular basis by both government and private sources. In some cases, relevant web sites are given. A wide range of topics such as: health, population, education, crime, travel and foreign country information are covered. Published by Competitive Media Reporting, this annual covers advertising expenditures in 10 major media. The service also covers expenditures for brands which spend $25.000 or more a year. Information on more than 70 travel related jobs. Each entry has a career profile that gives essential information such as salary, prerequisites, and duties for each job.

Environmental Information

The Encyclopedia of the Environment    Ref GE10 .E53 1994
Produced by the Rene Dubos Center for Human Environments, this single-volume encyclopedia addressing a wide range of environmental issues including travel and tourism. Each topical essay suggests sources for further reading.
Environmental Ethics    Ref GE42 .P35 1997
Environmental issues are examined from an ethical viewpoint in this handbook which also includes a directory of organizations, a glossary, biographical sketches, and bibliographies of other resources.

This encyclopedia has standardized entries for all countries. General demographic, social, political, governmental, geographical, and business information are given for each country included. There is even a short entry on each country’s travel and tourism.
Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life    Ref GN333 .W67 1998 (vols. 1-4)
A Companion volume to the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations. This four volume set is arranged by geographic region and explores the ways of life among 500 or more culture groups. Among the issues covered are: clothing, rites of passage, living conditions, cultural heritage, and folk crafts.

For information on travel and tourism, try the following databases: ABI/Inform, Business and Company Resource Database,  Business Source Premier, Academic Search Premier, Research Library, Lexis-Nexis, PsycINFO (for articles on the psychological aspects of travel and for personnel psychology) and Sociological Abstracts (This is the only database which indexes the following journals:  Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing, and Leisure Studies).
