FINDING ARTICLE CITATIONS Use a printed or electronic index, bibliography, or database to locate a citation to an article about a particular topic. If you are not sure which source to use--ask a librarian!   A successful search will provide you with a list of citations. Citations contain all the information you need to obtain a copy of the article, usually including the article title, author, journal title, publication date, page number(s), etc. You will need all of this information, so be sure to write it all down and keep it handy.
Example of a citation:

  LOCATING AN ARTICLE

1) Determine if the Pace University Library owns the journal Periodicals (magazines and journals) owned by the Pace University Library are listed in the Pace Library Catalog available on the World Wide Web at http://library.pace.edu/

    • From the library home page, select the Catalog option.
    • Choose JOURNAL TITLE
    • Enter the title of the journal/magazine.
    • Remember to exclude preceeding articles like a, an, and the when typing the journal title.

2) Determine the Location of the Journal in the Pace University Library
    • Click on the journal title to see which library location(s) have the journal you need.
There are four Pace library locations:  the Birnbaum Library in New York City, the Law Library in White Plains, the Graduate Center Library in White Plains, and the Mortola Library in Pleasantville.
You may need to scroll down the screen to view more copies or locations.  Be sure to read the screens carefully.

If you receive a record with another library listed, that item is held by the College of New Rochelle.  College of New Rochelle materials may be requested through Interlibrary Loan which may take up to ten days to arrive at your home library.  If your article is owned by the Pace Library but is not available on your campus, you may request the item through Intra-campus Loan which may take two days to arrive.

    • Check the dates to be sure that the particular issue/year you need is available at the correct library location.
    • Check to see where the volume you need is located in that library. The catalog will direct you to the Paper (current issues), bound or microfilm (MFILM) periodicals area of that library.
When you are finished with a reel of microfilm, rewind the film, put it in its box and
PLACE IT IN ONE OF THE BOXES ON TOP OF THE MICROFILM CABINETS.
    • Current issues, generally from the past year, of all journals are at the Periodicals Desk (the front desk at Mortola). Request the issue from the librarian. You will be required to provide your Pace ID card in order to retrieve these materials. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE PERIODICALS FROM THE LIBRARY! A hold will be placed on your record if you do not return periodicals to the desk.
    • If there is a record with the journal title followed by Ftxt, you may be able to get full-text articles from the library's databases  Click on the Ftxt record to see which databases and dates are available. You will not need to exit the catalog to access the database using the links provided.  Help sheets for several databases are available online as well as in each library.

3) To search the databases for full-text articles, you must:
    • Check the record to be sure the year for the journal is available.
    • Click on the appropriate links to go directly to the database you’ll need.
    • This will take you to a page describing that database.
    • Click on the name of the database to enter. (Note: some database vendors will list all the databases we subscribe to through them, just click on the name of the database you want.)
    • Perform a search on the key terms (most unique words) from the title of the article.
    • If your article is available, you can print out a paper copy, download it on to a disk, or e-mail it to yourself.
    • Within the library you will need to print to the print manager using a Copico card (see "Making a Copy" below).
4) Requesting Articles from another Pace Library Location (Intra-Campus Loan) Click on the Request button from the screen that shows that Pace University owns the issue of the journal you need.

Follow the prompts for completing the online request. Articles from other Pace Library locations generally take 2 to 3 business days to arrive. Requested articles may cost $0.15 per page to cover copying fees. You will need to call the library to check on the status of your order or stop by the Circulation/Front desk and inquire. When the article comes in, you can pick it up at the Circulation/Front Desk.

5) Getting Articles Pace Does Not Own - Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

If we don’t own the article you need, consider using one of our Document Delivery services - Ingenta or InfoTrieve - you can register for these services and request articles yourself, to be delivered via FAX or email.

If you would rather let the Library do the requesting for you, first check the Catalog to be sure the Pace University does not own the item. If you determine that Pace does not have the item, you may request it via Interlibrary Loan. Note: Interlibrary Loan items may take up to ten business days to arrive and there may be a cost associated with them.

    • From the Library home page, choose Interlibrary Loan
    • Log on to the ILLiad InterLibrary Loan System. (If this is your first time, use the Create a Profile link to get started.)
    • Fill out as much of the information on the forms as possible including your name and the barcode from the back or your Pace ID.
    • Requests will not normally be filled without a phone number or email address, so be sure to include one.
    • Requests will not normally be filled if the item is already owned by the Pace University Library.
MAKING A COPY OF AN ARTICLE WITHIN THE LIBRARY

You can make a copy of an article using any of the library’s photocopy machines or using a Microfilm Printer/Reader. Copies cost $0.15 per page and can be paid for by using a Copy Card (or coins in selected machines).

You can purchase a Copy Card in one of the vending machines next to the Microfilm Reader/Printers. You can purchase either a $1.00, $5.00 or $10.00 card. Follow the instructions on the machine to purchase a card. Use the same card all year (Don't throw it out!).  Simply add money to the card when you need to make more copies.

WRITE YOUR NAME CLEARLY ON YOUR CARD AND CONSIDER MARKING IT WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AS WELL! If you don’t write your name on the card or provide your email address, we cannot return it to you.
