Search Literature Resource Center

WHAT IS Literature Resource Center?

The Literature Resource Center, LRC, contains biographical, bibliographical, and contextual information on authors and their works in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history, and journalism.  The resources include the databases of Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and Contemporary Literary Criticism as well as the Encyclopedia of Literature, which has over 10,000 entries.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN A Literature Resource Center RECORD?

A Literature Resource Center record can come in several forms. Biographical descriptions may have a picture of the author. Work Overviews give a brief discussion of the author's life works. Criticism, such as the example below, and Current Journal Articles can also be found in this database.

HOW TO SEARCH Literature Resource Center

Accessing the Database
  1. Go to the Pace University Library homepage at http://library.pace.edu
  2. Click on the Databases button.
  3. Select Literature Resource Center from the alphabetical list of Electronic Resources.
  4. Click on Literature Resource Center from the description page.
  5. Click Proceed from the Infotrac/Gale Group Welclome Page.
SEARCHING

The system defaults to an Author Search. You may also search by any of the underlined field names on the search page.  You may search by Title, Keyword, Author by Type, Literary-Historical Timeline, or perform an Advanced Search.

Author Search

  1. To perform an Author search, click in the text box and type the author's name.
  2. Click on the green Search button.
Title Search
    1. To perform a Title Search, click on "Title" in the blue Other Searches box.
    2. Click in the box and type the title.  Use significant words in the title and click on the circle next to "All words entered"  or "Exact title" if you have typed te exact title.
    3. You may also narrow your search by adding an author name in the second box.
    4. Click on the green Search button.

Author by Type

  1. If you would like to search for an author by a different category, click on Author by Type in the Blue Other Searches box.
  2. This type of search allows you to search by Author Ethnicity, Author Nationality, Genre, Literary Movement/Time Period, Literary Themes, or Gender.
  3. Click in the boxes for your search options and select from the drop down menus.
  4. When you have completed your selections, click on the green Search Button.

ADVANCED SEARCHING

The Advanced Search option allows you to select from drop down menus and Boolean Operators as well as use the drop down menus for Document Type.

VIEWING RESULTS

     Author Search
    1. Click on the author's name on the results page.
    2. A page with the author's name, picture and general information will be displayed. Use the tabs towards the top of the page to see the variety of information provided by the database. You may find biographies, lists of the author's work, and criticism. You may also find Additional resources on the author and other writers whose work may be compared with or contrasted to your chosen author.
    3. Click on the tab with the topic of your choice to get to a list or a second search screen.  If a list is present you can click on the title of each article for full text materials.  If the screen has further search options, such as in a search for authors for comparison, follow the instructions on the screen.

         Title Search
      1. Click on the title of your choice to see the full-text document.

    PRINTING
      1. Check the top left of the page for a Print icon.  If this button is available, click on it to format the article for printing from your browser.
      2. Click print on the browser's toolbar at the top of the screen.

    DOWNLOADING
      1. To save records to a disk, click on the File menu at the top of the screen. 
      2. Select Save as... from the pull down menu. 
      3. Select the a:/ drive.
      4. Give your file a name ending in .txt. 
      5. Click OK.

      Note:  Saving the file as .txt will give you all the text of the article.  The graphics will be lost.  You may choose to save the article as an .html document, which will preserve the visual layout and graphics.  However, the .html format may not be compatible with your word processing program.

    EMAILING
      1. Click on the Email icon next to the print icon at the top of the document.
      2. Fill in your email address and choose the HTML or Plain Text option.
      3. Click on the gray Send button. You will receive a confirmation screen including the email address to which the document has been sent. To return to the document, use your browser's Back button.
