ProQuest Historical Newspapers The New York Times
Description | Limiting Your Search by Date | Searching for Individual Issues | Limiting by Article Type Browsing through pages of the Newspaper | Printing | Downloading | Emailing Problems Viewing Articles | Related databases | Search this database This database covers the New York Times from its inception to 2001, including its early years as the New York Daily Times from 1851-1857. It offers coverage of national and international news, plus coverage of important speeches and documents, Supreme Court decisions, presidential press conference transcripts, book reviews, and much more. Key features of this database:-Limiting Your Search by DateLimiting the date of
articles you are searching for is often the most important aspect
of a search in this database, because of the tremendous volume
of articles. The keywords you enter into the search box will retrieve
results that include all articles that contain those words anywhere
in the text of the article, so if you know you want things only
from a specific time period. Be sure to limit to a date range.
You may also limit your results to a single date or to things
published before a specific date. -Searching for an Individual Issue of the NewspaperSearch for all articles
from a specific issue of the New York Times by clicking on the
Publication Search tab from the top menu. Then click on Show all
publications. You will be given two choices: (return
to top of page) 1. To access this feature,
click on More Search Options in the bottom left hand corner
of the search screen. (return to top of page)-Using the Page Map / Page Image features to browse pages of the NewspaperClick on Page Map beside
an article to see a picture of what the entire page of the newspaper
looks like. Once in this view, you may click on Page Image to
print a picture of the entire page from Adobe. You may also click
on an individual story from the Page Map View to go to the Article
Image in Adobe. -Printing ArticlesIn order to print articles
from this database you must click on the Print button in the Adobe
Acrobat reader window. If you choose Print from the File menu,
it will not print the article. The articles in this
database were scanned from the original newspaper, so articles
that begin at the bottom of one column and then continue at the
top of another column or page, may appear at first as if they
are missing. You should scroll down and/or over to view the text
of these articles. -Articles and photographs not available in the databaseMany of the photographs and a small number of articles may not be available via this database, because of copyright issues. These articles can be printed or viewed via the Page image view which can be accessed from the Page Map view. Another option is to view and/or print the article from microfilm. The New York Times is available on microfilm on the second floor of the Birnbaum Library in New York City. If you are in Pleasantville, you may request that an article be photocopied and sent to Pleasantville via the Library Catalog. See the Reference Desk, if you need help. -Emailing articles to yourselfTo email articles to
yourself, click on the gold Email button. Then make sure to select
the button next to Page/Article image - PDF. Otherwise, you will
only send a citation for the article. The article will be sent
to you as an attachment to an email message. -Downloading ArticlesTo download a copy of an article you must click on the disk image from the Adobe acrobat window.
