Description

This database covers the New York Times from its inception to 2001, including its early years as the New York Daily Times from 1851-1857. It offers coverage of national and international news, plus coverage of important speeches and documents, Supreme Court decisions, presidential press conference transcripts, book reviews, and much more.

Key features of this database:

-Limiting Your Search by Date

Limiting the date of articles you are searching for is often the most important aspect of a search in this database, because of the tremendous volume of articles. The keywords you enter into the search box will retrieve results that include all articles that contain those words anywhere in the text of the article, so if you know you want things only from a specific time period. Be sure to limit to a date range. You may also limit your results to a single date or to things published before a specific date.

-Searching for an Individual Issue of the Newspaper

Search for all articles from a specific issue of the New York Times by clicking on the Publication Search tab from the top menu. Then click on Show all publications. You will be given two choices:
New York Daily Times (1851-1857) New York, N.Y.
New York Times (1857-Current file); New York, N.Y.
(You would only choose New York Daily Times, if you were looking for articles from 1851-1857.)
Now limit the issues to a specific month and year range and click on Search. Choose a specific issue from the list. This will provide a list of all the articles from that day's newspaper. Click on Sort by Page Number from the menu at the top right to see article results from the front page first. Click on Page Map from the first article to see the front page.
