What is ERIC?

The Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) is a database maintained by the U.S. Department of Education that provides references and descriptions of both journal articles and documents covering the literature of education from 1966 to the present. The ERIC database consists of two distinct components: The Current Index to Journals in Education and Resources in Education. The Current Index to Journals in Education indexes over 980 journals dealing with the field of education. Journal articles are identified with an EJ prefix in the ERIC number. Resources in Education makes available indexing, abstracting and full-text of non-journal education documents (including curriculum guides, instructional materials, research reports, opinion papers, conference proceedings, project and program descriptions, bibliographies, and test and measurement instruments), which have the prefix ED in the ERIC number. (A search in the ERIC database will automatically search both the CIJE and the RIE databases.)

What is in an ERIC record?

Each ERIC record will has information broken up into fields such as Title, Author, Source, Publication Date, Language, Publication Type, and Eric # . There will also be a fields that have Descriptors and Identifiers, which are the subjects of the record and an Abstract further describing the full-text information. Some articles will be available in full text from this database.

HOW TO SEARCH ERIC

Searching

  1. Start a search by clicking in the Find box and type a word or phrase that best describes your topic.
  2. If your topic encompasses more than one concept, break it into keywords.  Type each keyword in a different search entry box. They will be connected automatically using the word AND to find documents with all of your keywords.  To find documents containing either keyword, connect terms by using the word OR.
  3. Click on the Search button to get your results.

The database will default to search for your keywords in the following fields: Title, Author, Subjects (Descriptors/Identifiers), Institution Name, Core Subjects, and the Abstract Summary. To search only for words in a specific field, click on the drop-down menu next to the search box labeled “Default Fields.” Then select the field in which to limit your search terms.

Your options for field searching include:

Subject: Searches for the exact subject heading descriptors.

Title: Searches words in the title of the article.

Author: Searches for the author(s) last name followed by a first name or initial.

Core Subject: Searches words in the core subject (major descriptor) headings within an ERIC record.

Abstract: Searches the abstract (summary of the article) for keywords.

Institution Name: Searches the originating institution or sponsoring agency.

Clearinghouse: Searches for words in the clearinghouse name.

Journal Name: Searches for the exact journal name displayed within the Source field.

Intended Audience: Searches the type of audience the item is targeted toward. Possible audiences include the following: Administrators - Community - Counselors - Media Staff - Parents - Policymakers - Practitioners - Researchers - Students - Teachers.

Language: Searches the exact language(s) of the publication.

Country of Publication: Searches the origin of the item by exact country, state, province, or territory.

For example: You could limit your search to include items in the Journal Name field and type Journal of Education in the corresponding search box.

Locating Journal Articles or Documents cited in ERIC

ERIC journals (EJ): If you would like to see the entire article from a CIJE citation, look up the journal in the Pace Library Catalog by performing a Journal Title search, using the Journal title. Copies of the articles may then be obtained from the appropriate library.

ERIC documents (ED): If the ERIC Document you are looking for is NOT available in full-text in the ERIC database, please use the ILLIAD Interlibrary Loan system to request the item, and we can get it for you from another library in the area.
